Alex is a five-year-old Marion boy who suffers from Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Money raised by the poker run will benefit Alex, and Families of SMA, a group that helps families like the Pateakos’ live their lives as close to normal as possible. Christmas Holiday Shop484 viewsSt. Anthony’s and St. Rita’s parishioners combined efforts to give the community a Christmas Holiday Shop and Celebration on Saturday, December 5, 2009. The basement of St. Anthony’s church was decked out in snowflakes, wreaths, bells, bows, and a Santa sleigh. Santa listened patiently as children told him what they wanted for Christmas. River Road Flood484 viewsA rainstorm on March 29 and 30 wreaked havoc on Massachusetts, leaving the Commonwealth in a state of emergency. The real fall-out didn’t arrive until March 31, when water tables reached record heights and dams in the region were tested to their maximum capacity. The Hathaway Pond Dam in Rochester needed reinforcement with sandbags and the area of Plumb Corner and Dexter Lane became a makeshift pond. Memorial Day484 viewsThe Florence Eastman Post 220 in Mattapoisett hosted the town’s Memorial Day observance and parade on May 31, 2010. The ceremony began with a service at the Veteran’s monument in front of the library, and then a parade assembled and marched to the town wharf and to Cushing Cemetery. Harbor Days Craze484 viewsThe town gazebo was the scene of another sultry Harbor Days this past weekend. Rows of vendors peddled their fun wares while visitors of all ages enjoyed music, conversation and the best strawberry shortcake in the world. The Militia demonstrated 18th century living, made beef stew, completed drills, and talked about the dentistry methods of that time period.
