The unusual weather event downed power lines and hundreds of trees, knocking out power to many homes north of Route 195. Television news crews descended from Boston, as the Mattapoisett Fire and Police departments worked with utility companies and many power lines to clean up roads and assist area residents coming home to frightening scenes. March is Reading Month441 viewsThe students at Center School in Mattapoisett honored the month of the Young Reader and Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2. Children came dressed in stripes, wearing hats and toting copies of their favorite Dr. Seuss books. The cafeteria served green eggs and ham for lunch, and throughout the day, everyone enjoyed many of the wonderful books that Dr. Seuss wrote. Mom's Running441 viewsOver 600 runners came to Mattapoisett on May 9, 2010 to celebrate mom in the fourth annual Tiara Classic 5K road race. This year’s race had more runners than ever, despite the wind and cold temperatures. New Year Plunge441 viewsOn January 1, 2013, Mattapoisett Town Beach played host to a New Year’s polar plunge fundraiser. The event, which attracted over 400 people, raised money to benefit BAM Foundation, Inc., a New Bedford non-profit which donates money to South Coast families dealing with members who have cancer. Freezin' for a Reason 2014441 viewsParticipants in the 2014 Polar Plunge on January 1 were encouraged to wear costumes for the event, which raised thousands of dollars for the BAM Foundation. BAM is an organization that offers financial assistance to families battling cancer to help offset the unexpected costs of cancer treatment. Hundreds of people turned out for the event, with over a hundred participants who plunged into 34 degree waters, just a few degrees warmer than the 28 degree air temperature that morning. Visitors learned all about the history of swords and the origins of sword fighting, while Jeff Lord and Jeff Goodkind from the Association for Renaissance and Medieval Swordsmanship gave live demonstrations before a crowd of enthusiastic kids and adults.
