Heritage Days 2011486 viewsChildren festooned their bicycles and enjoyed a ride around the village as a part of the 2011 Mattapoisett Heritage Days on August 6. Other Saturday activities included guided village tours, an evening concert and a treasure hunt. Mattapoisett bustled with activities on Saturday, but the bonfire was canceled due to wind, and many Heritage Days activities were canceled on Sunday due to heavy rain. Photos by Felix Perez.

Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Plunge486 viewsIt takes a certain type of person to jump into the cold ocean on New Year’s morning. Behold, the locals who fit that description as they enjoy a frosty January 1st at Mattapoisett Town Beach for the annual Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Plunge! Hundreds lined the beach to take the plunge, with bundled spectators watching from the sidelines and cheering as the plungers charged ahead screaming and shrieking with exhilaration. Mattapoisett Town Oyster Farmer486 viewsBill Mansfield has become the de facto Mattapoisett town oyster farmer, overseeing the town’s oyster farming program since 2014. His efforts coupled with a crew of about 20 other volunteers has taken on the labor-intensive work of rearing young oysters to maturity in Pine Island Pond. Ashley Mural485 viewsThe mural by Clifford Ashley, donated to the Mattapoisett Historical Society by Polly Duff Phipps, was unveiled in a ceremony at the Mattapoisett Museum and Carriage House on July 31, 2011 after extensive renovation. The mural, entitled "A Chart of the Whale Coast of New England, c. 1810" will now be on display in the Museum at 5 Church Street, Mattapoisett. Freezin' for a Reason 2014485 viewsParticipants in the 2014 Polar Plunge on January 1 were encouraged to wear costumes for the event, which raised thousands of dollars for the BAM Foundation. BAM is an organization that offers financial assistance to families battling cancer to help offset the unexpected costs of cancer treatment. Hundreds of people turned out for the event, with over a hundred participants who plunged into 34 degree waters, just a few degrees warmer than the 28 degree air temperature that morning.
