Santa Arrives504 viewsMattapoisett held its annual holiday celebration and tree lighting on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at Shipyard Park. The rain couldn't dampen holiday spirits as visitors enjoyed delicious food and listened to Christmas music performed by the Showstoppers. Children made their own ornaments and hung them on the Christmas tree. They also danced with Rudolph and Frosty and shared their Christmas wishes with Santa Claus. Photo by Felix Perez.

Christmas Swim504 viewsA 2009 Christmas morning swim benefitted Helping Hands and Hooves, a Mattapoisett non-profit organization dedicated to therapeutic horseback riding for adults with disabilities. 40 swimmers and at least 50 onlookers participated in the 2009 swim. Museum Mural504 viewsA large 6 by 16 foot Clifford Ashley mural was donated to the Mattapoisett Museum by Polly Phipps of 20 Water Street. The mural, which depicts the Southcoast of Massachusetts from the Connecticut River to the Cape and Islands, hung in the Water Street home for 90 years before being donated to the Museum. Mattapoisett Historical Society President Seth Mendell said that after the mural is professionally restored, it will be mounted on the wall in the Museum. Photo by Anne O'Brien-Kakley.

Only two percent of all Boy Scouts ever reach the Eagle rank, which is the highest rank in Boy Scouts. Little fingers sticky with glue flattened out cotton balls and fastened them to prefabricated Styrofoam snowperson shapes, and then glued on the trimmings under the guidance of caregivers. Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Plunge504 viewsIt takes a certain type of person to jump into the cold ocean on New Year’s morning. Behold, the locals who fit that description as they enjoy a frosty January 1st at Mattapoisett Town Beach for the annual Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Plunge! Hundreds lined the beach to take the plunge, with bundled spectators watching from the sidelines and cheering as the plungers charged ahead screaming and shrieking with exhilaration. Memorial Day504 viewsThe rain cancelled the parade and forced the Memorial Day observance indoors on Monday, but many gathered to honor our fallen soldiers and their families inside Center School. Keynote speaker Commander Bryan D. Williams gave a heartfelt speech, while George Randall recited the Gettysburg Address to mark the 100th anniversary of when his father, Jeremiah, first read it on Memorial Day in 1917 at the age of 15.
