Mother’s Day Tiara 5k562 viewsSunday’s wind and rain wasn’t stopping the hundreds who participated in the annual Mother’s Day Tiara 5k in Mattapoisett on May 10. The storm brought strong wind and cold rain to the area, especially at the turn around Ned’s Point Lighthouse, dampening the day but not the sentiment behind the Women’s Fund of Southeastern Massachusetts’ largest annual fundraising event. Family Fun Festival 562 viewsFamilies came out in record numbers to enjoy the 4th Annual Fall Free Family Fun Festival sponsored by the Mattapoisett’s Lion Club on October 19 held at Shipyard Park. Bruce Rocha of the club estimated attendance at over 400. Kids and adults alike enjoyed free face painting, bowling with pumpkins, a corn hole toss, snacks, hayrides to Ned’s Point and, yes, free pumpkins to take home. Ashley Mural561 viewsThe mural by Clifford Ashley, donated to the Mattapoisett Historical Society by Polly Duff Phipps, was unveiled in a ceremony at the Mattapoisett Museum and Carriage House on July 31, 2011 after extensive renovation. The mural, entitled "A Chart of the Whale Coast of New England, c. 1810" will now be on display in the Museum at 5 Church Street, Mattapoisett. Each of Ms. Phipps' seven children were presented with a miniature mural at the ceremony. Photos by Katherine Gaudet.

Dreaming of a White Christmas561 viewsThis barn, photographed on December 26, 2010, was part of the original Riverside Farms, a dairy farm that stretched along River Road. It was built in the late 1930s by Manuel R. Nunes, Sr. when an agricultural law was passed to segregate horses from dairy cattle. His son, Manuel R. Nunes, Jr. was the Mattapoisett Highway Surveyor for many years. The barn is still in use today for horses and hay storage by Nunes descendants, still living along River Road. Photo by Tim Smith.

Helping Hands and Hooves is a non-profit (based in Mattapoisett) that is dedicated to providing therapeutic horseback riding lessons for adults with disabilities. Mattapoisett Tree Lighting560 viewsMattapoisett lit one of the biggest trees Shipyard Park has ever seen at the 2011 Holiday in the Park. There was food from local establishments, ornament making, merry music and Santa! The moment was enough to spur two romantic marriage proposals. Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Plunge560 viewsIt takes a certain type of person to jump into the cold ocean on New Year’s morning. Behold, the locals who fit that description as they enjoy a frosty January 1st at Mattapoisett Town Beach for the annual Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Plunge! Hundreds lined the beach to take the plunge, with bundled spectators watching from the sidelines and cheering as the plungers charged ahead screaming and shrieking with exhilaration.
