Veterans Day Ceremony in Mattapoiset642 viewsOn November 11 following the Veterans Day Ceremony at Old Hammondtown School in Mattapoisett, members of Boy Scout Troop 53 performed a flag decommissioning ceremony at the Mattapoisett Land Trust’s Dunseith Gardens. Flags had been placed in decommissioning boxes built by Drew Robert for his Eagle project. The flags were then collected from the boxes located at the police department, town hall and public library and prepared for burning and burial.

Straws642 viewsOn April 17, the Mattapoisett Land Trust in partnership with the Mattapoisett Public Library hosted an airing of the documentary “Straws”, a film about the negative impact plastic straws have on marine life. The storm brought strong wind and cold rain to the area, especially at the turn around Ned’s Point Lighthouse, dampening the day but not the sentiment behind the Women’s Fund of Southeastern Massachusetts’ largest annual fundraising event. Mattapoisett Town Oyster Farmer642 viewsBill Mansfield has become the de facto Mattapoisett town oyster farmer, overseeing the town’s oyster farming program since 2014. His efforts coupled with a crew of about 20 other volunteers has taken on the labor-intensive work of rearing young oysters to maturity in Pine Island Pond. Family Fun Festival 642 viewsFamilies came out in record numbers to enjoy the 4th Annual Fall Free Family Fun Festival sponsored by the Mattapoisett’s Lion Club on October 19 held at Shipyard Park. Bruce Rocha of the club estimated attendance at over 400. Kids and adults alike enjoyed free face painting, bowling with pumpkins, a corn hole toss, snacks, hayrides to Ned’s Point and, yes, free pumpkins to take home. Museum Mural641 viewsA large 6 by 16 foot Clifford Ashley mural was donated to the Mattapoisett Museum by Polly Phipps of 20 Water Street. The mural, which depicts the Southcoast of Massachusetts from the Connecticut River to the Cape and Islands, hung in the Water Street home for 90 years before being donated to the Museum. Mattapoisett Historical Society President Seth Mendell said that after the mural is professionally restored, it will be mounted on the wall in the Museum. Photo by Anne O'Brien-Kakley.
