Pond Hockey278 viewsAfter winters so warm that ice could not form or drought so severe that vernal pools, intermittent streams and frog ponds had dried up, the 2022 winter season has proven perfect for outdoor skating. Rainfall throughout the fall and winter seasons has filled up even the smallest depressions with water sufficient to make nature’s skating rinks glisten anew. The old frog pond located just south of Tinkham Hill Road on North Street has been a wintertime favorite for decades. January 27, 2022 edition

Marion Wells274 viewsMarion’s well field at Mary’s Pond is a work in progress, as three state-of-the-art, 12-inch well pipes with submersible pumps are replacing 26 red-capped pipes that measure 2½ inches in diameter. The network of smaller pipes has been operated by one pump located inside the station building. When completed, Marion expects that upgrades at the East and West well fields and at Mary’s Pond will enable the town to double its water production. See story on Water/Sewer Commissioners.

Hammond Cemetery273 viewsHammond Cemetery, located along River Road and acquired by the Town of Mattapoisett (then part of Rochester) on January 10, 1789, is home to burials dating prior to 1740. Like the town-owned Barlow Cemetery located off Park Street, the Hammond burial ground is in dire need of maintenance and will benefit greatly by the formation of a new committee that will advise the Select Board. Morning Kayaking272 viewsAs with many mornings, not a ripple was seen or felt across Mattapoisett Harbor except those made by kayaker Cecile Callahan as August got underway. More recent tidal interference brought on by tropical storm Henri and the full moon have since receded, leaving us with our own peaceful if dreamy water world again. Photo by Laura McLean.
