Anthony DeCosta 331 viewsAnthony DeCosta was well known in Mattapoisett as a painter and the co-author of a book about the first Portuguese residents in the town. Born in 1892, he was a lifelong resident, except for the years he drove an ambulance during World War I. In his later years, he painted pictures of Mattapoisett, including the Ned’s Point Lighthouse, the whaling ship The Wanderer, and of New Bedford’s streets during the whaling years. Fish Ladder Repair313 viewsThe Mattapoisett Water Department, along with the assistance of the state’s Division of Marine Fisheries and local herring inspectors, were able to purchase the necessary lumber and rebuild the fish ladder at the Mattapoisett River Dam. There are 13 ladders that make up the weir, which allows easier access for the herring to head upstream. They are hoping to see the first few fish within the next couple of weeks.
