Antonia Olivia (Gonsalves) Gomes

Antonia Olivia (Gonsalves) Gomes, 99, died Monday, October 17, 2011 at the Forestview Nursing Home in Wareham. She was the widow of the late Julio P. Gomes. Born in Falmouth, the daughter of the late Philip & Mary (Silvia) Gonsalves, she attended Falmouth schools. She worked as a domestic in private homes. A longtime resident of Onset, Mrs. Gomes was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Onset. Survivors include her sons, Felix P. Gomes of Marion, Robert G. Gomes of Falmouth and Joseph Gomes of Taunton; 20 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren and 15 great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sons, the late Julio P. Gomes, Jr., David Gomes, Margaret Gomes, Christina Gomes and Marguerite Gomes. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thurs., Oct. 20, 2011 at St. Mary’s Church, Onset Ave., Onset at 11:00 AM. Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Wareham. Relatives and friends may visit at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Highway (Rt. 28), Wareham on Thursday from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM prior to the Mass.

Paul R. Sarris

Paul R. Sarris, 64, of Marion, died October 11, 2011 in the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston after a long battle with cancer. He was the son of the late Joseph and Margaret (McGirr) Sarris. He was born in Newton, grew up in Millis and lived in Marion for many years. He graduated from Millis High School, Class of 1965 and later graduated from Bryant and Stratton Business College in Boston. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Mr. Sarris worked as a Soundman for ABC News for many years before retiring. He was a member of the Amvets Association, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the American Legion in Millis. He loved the ocean and being out on Buzzards Bay in his boat. Survivors include his girlfriend, Kimberly Besse of Wareham; his brother, Joseph “Howie” Sarris and his wife, Gail Richardson of Medway and Hobe Sound, FL; several other family members including his niece, Emily; 2 nephews; and numerous friends. His funeral will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 15, 2011 from the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 2599 Cranberry Hwy., Wareham, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in St. Rita’s Church, Front St., Marion. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Marion. Visiting hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Rita (Charette) Lamarre

Rita (Charette) Lamarre, 89, formerly of New Bedford passed away Monday, October 10, 2011 at the Royal of Fairhaven after a long period of declining health. She was the wife of the late Lawrence Lamarre. Born and raised in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Alecta (Dion) Charette, she lived in Mattapoisett and Thousand Oaks, California before returning to New Bedford. She was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy in Fairhaven. A caring and compassionate person, Rita was senior clerk for the Department of Welfare for 25 years until her retirement at age 70. She volunteered in the visitors center at the New Bedford Historical Park. She was also a member of the New Bedford Preservation Society. Mrs. Lamarre loved the beach and quahogging at Shinning Tide’s in Mattapoisett but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her beloved grandchildren who were the love of her life. She is survived by two daughters, Lauren L. Francis of Fairhaven and Leslie Lamarre of Dartmouth; three grandchildren, Jason and Justin Francis and Chloe Lang; a brother, Warren Charette of Fairhaven; and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Rita was the mother of the late Linwood Lamarre and sister of the late Norman Charette and Doris Kinney. In accordance with her wishes she will be cremated and memorial calling hours will be Saturday, October 15, 2011 from 9:30-11:00 AM with a service at 11:00 AM in the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Fairhaven. A Celebration of Rita’s Life will follow at one of her favorite places, her daughter Lauren’s home in Fairhaven.

Margaret A. "Peggy" McManus-Gilmette

Margaret A. "Peggy" McManus-Gilmette passed away Monday October 10, 2011, surrounded by her children and loved ones after a long and inspirational battle with cancer. Peggy was the widow of the love of her life Aniceto “Che Che” Gilmette. A tirelessly hard worker Peggy began as a stitcher and worked her way up through college eventually obtaining her Master’s Degree in Social Work and routinely making the Dean’s List. All while providing for and raising her children. An advocate for others, Peggy was formally employed by Coastline Elderly Services and recently celebrated her 20th anniversary as a Social Worker at St. Luke’s Hospital. While at St. Luke’s, Peggy worked in the Maternity Ward and was instrumental in establishing a bereavement program which included a “scattering garden” located in the Acushnet Cemetery for parents to mourn the loss of their child. Peggy loved to spend time with her grandchildren, entertaining, shopping and decorating her home. Her fondest memories were growing up with her “Cape Cousins”, the children of the late Peter and Margaret Silvia of Rochester. Peggy is the daughter of Clarence Santos of Worcester and the late Anna Anastacio of New Bedford and she is predeceased by her sisters Carol Lomba and Patricia Ferreira. She is survived by her children Karen McManus of Randolph, Robert and Karin McManus of Plymouth, and Paul and Sandy McManus of Dartmouth. Peggy leaves seven grandchildren Kristen, Jillian, Jaron, Bryce, Troi, Reece, Jaxson and a great-granddaughter AvaMarie in addition to several nieces and nephews and two half brothers and sisters. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the many friends and family that assisted Peggy throughout her illness including Manuel Botelho, May Johnson, Anita Mendes, Pat Vale, Elizabeth Ferreira, Dorothy Pina and Janet Shurtleff and in particular Ivy MacMahon. Last but not least Dexter her loving pet and companion. Her Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 9 AM in the First Church of the Nazarene, 764 Hathaway Rd., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Thursday from 4-8 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals.

Brian David Curtis and Dawn Marie Boudria will be married October 9, 2011 at the Atlantic Beach Club in Newport RI. The couple met in Washington DC in 2008 and currently reside in Centreville, Virginia. Dawn attended Center School, OHS, and ORR and graduated in 1999. She then went on to receive a Bachelor's Degree from Umass Dartmouth. Her father Fernald Boudria and stepmother Donna Boudria still reside in Mattapoisett, MA. Brian grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma and after four years in the United States Airforce and a deployment to Iraq, he moved to the DC area to work for the department of defense and to attend school at George Mason University.

Robert Mace Bent, Jr.

Robert Mace Bent, Jr. of Marion, MA died on October 8, 2011 after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Esther McSheehy Bent and is survived by his children, Robert M. Bent, III and his wife Colleen of Greenfield, MA, Peter E. Bent and his wife Nancy of Sherborn, MA and Barbara M. Bent and her fiancé Stephen A. Miller of Woburn, MA. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mr. Bent was born in Cambridge in 1921 and grew up in Worcester, MA. He was a graduate of Worcester Classical High School and the Lowell Textile School (now the University of Massachusetts - Lowell). Mr. Bent earned money doing odd jobs to pay for flying lessons when he was a boy and got his pilot's license at the age of 16. It followed that he was assigned to be a flight instructor in the Army Air Corps during World War II, teaching men his age and older how to fly and navigate the Army's planes. After the war, he went into the wool business, eventually working in and taking over his father's firm where he bought raw wool from farms and ranches in Great Britain, Australia, and South America, and sold the processed wool to mills in the USA. He and his wife raised their children in Newton and Wellesley and spent their summers in Marion where they belonged to The Kittansett Club. In 1972, the bents winterized their cottage and became year-round residents of Marion, enjoying their increased free time playing golf and traveling. Mr. Bent also served on several committees and on the Board of Governors at The Kittansett Club. Besides golf and travel, Mr. Bent enjoyed working in his yard and in his workshop, driving any car anywhere, playing bridge and poker, reading books with an historical perspective, following the Red Sox, and savoring the pleasure of a fine English Stilton. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Pine Street Inn, Development Office, 444 Harrison Ave., Boston, MA 02118. His Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Rita's Church, 113 Front St. Marion, Saturday, October 29th at 11 AM. Visiting hours are omitted. Interment private. Thomas W. Finn

Thomas W. Finn, 63, of Somerset formerly of Mattapoisett passed away on October 7, 2011 at Saint Anne’s Hospital in Fall River. He was born in New Bedford the son of the late Charles D. and Evelyn (Gatenby) Finn. He attended Holy Family and eventually graduated from Old Rochester Regional. Mr. Finn served his country with the United States Navy during the Viet Nam War. Tom then worked as a cable splicer for New England Telephone for twenty years, retiring in 1993. He was an avid reader, and volunteered for the Meals on Wheels Program in New Bedford for several years. Survivors are a sister: Elizabeth G. Fairhurst and her husband Franklin E. of Fall River, MA; two nephews: Walter E. Fairhurst of Fall River, MA; and William E. Fairhurst of Virginia; a god daughter: Jessica Jordan of Vermont; lifetime friends: Jeannette Jordan of Vermont; Dennis Rainey of Rehoboth, MA; along with several cousins. A Memorial Service for Mr. Finn will be held on Friday at 9am in the HATHAWAY HOME for FUNERALS, 1813 Robeson St., Fall River, with a burial to follow with Military Honors in Saint Anthony Cemetery in Mattapoisett. Elizabeth Parcells Arms

Elizabeth Parcells Arms, 93, died peacefully in the loving company of her husband of more than 72 years, Charles Arms, at their home in Marion, Massachusetts, on Wednesday, October 5, 2011. Betsy, as all her many friends and family knew her, was born in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, in 1918. She attended Connecticut College, serving as Class President and Head of Student Government, graduating with a BA in Art in 1939. On July 3rd of that same year, she was married to her beloved husband Charles, a marriage based on a storybook love affair that was to thrive and strengthen for nearly three-quarters of a century. For the first 30 years of this marriage, she lived in Cleveland, Ohio, where she raised her three children and where she served as an active volunteer for the Junior League, the Fairmount Presbyterian Church, and numerous other community organizations. Beginning in 1979, she spent semi-retirement years with her husband at their home at Ocean Reef, Florida, where she was deeply involved with the formation of the Ocean Reef Chapel and the Ocean Reef Art League. Here she also found time to become a voluminous reader as well as to pursue her lifelong passion for drawing and watercolor. During these same years, she and her husband spent summers in Marion, Massachusetts, where she became involved with the Sippican Historical Society and the Marion Art Center. She touched many lives during these years and made countless friends, all of whom came to know her as a wise advisor and loving counselor, always giving of herself, always eager to listen, support, and affirm. She is survived by her husband Charles, her sister Mariana Wagoner, her son, Myron Arms and his wife Kay, her daughter Carolyn Young and her husband Skip Crane, her daughter-in-law Margot Stone, widow of her late son David Arms, as well as by seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Norman F. Gorden, 79, of Mattapoisett died October 3, 2011 unexpectedly at Tufts Medical Center. He was the husband of Nancy M. (McAdam) Gorden. Mr. Gorden was the son of the late Carl P. and Dorothy P. (Childs) Gorden, he lived in Taunton for 36 years before moving to Mattapoisett in 2000. He retired as chairman of the Bristol County Saving Bank after more than 30 years of service. Mr. Gorden served in Japan in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He enjoyed sailing and was the navigator aboard the Wind Flower II in the 1979 Marion to Bermuda race where they took first place in their class and third overall. He also enjoyed time spent with his family in Vermont. Survivors include his wife Nancy; 2 daughters, Susan Gorden Ryan of Mattapoisett and Kristen Gorden Hallam and her husband David of Assonet: 3 grandchildren, Shane Patrick Ryan, Chase Hunter Ryan and Kassidy Gorden Hallam; 3 step-grandchildren, Alie Hallam, Olivia Hallam and Madeline Hallam. Manuel C. "Buddy" Costa, 84, of Mattapoisett died Saturday October 1, 2011 at Alden Court Nursing Home after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Alice (Robinson) Costa. Born in Mattapoisett, the son of the late Joseph M. and Mary J. (Secia) Costa, he lived in Marion for most of his life before returning to Mattapoisett three years ago. Mr. Costa was formerly employed by the Marion Department of Public Works until his retirement. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Costa of Mattapoisett and Patricia Ferguson and her husband Neil of New Bedford; a brother, Anthony Costa of Fairhaven; two grandchildren, Gena and Terrell Costa; and four great-grandchildren, Andre, Daquan, Tyzhaya, and Andre. He was the brother of the late Albert, Edward, Joseph, and Walter Costa. A private family service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery, Marion.
