Kate chose to name the event’s tell-tale mascot “Welcome the Whale.” The First Night New Bedford 2006 committee chose the winning name “Welcome” for its cheerful whale design depicted on First Night buttons and posters. The pilots use charts provided by the United States Government to determine if the thickness of the ice is enough to support the weight of their airplanes.
