With the placement of the Santa hat upon the head of our beloved Salty the Seahorse, the holiday season officially began. Marion Natural History Museum263 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's afterschool group enjoyed learning the history of the Bird Island lighthouse and viewing the return of the birds to the island. We spotted roseate terns, common terns, oyster catchers, some unhappy Canadian geese, and a nesting mallard duck. We also learned about the recent restoration efforts made by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife to improve drainage and provide adequate nesting habitat for the returning birds. Mattapoisett Memorial Day263 viewsMattapoisett Board of Selectmen along with members of the American Legion Florence Eastman Post 280, Rep. William Straus, and special guest Col. Chris Kidd attended the Memorial Day observances at Center School on May 28. The Old Hammondtown School concert band under the direction of Cara Kinney played patriotic tunes to a full house, and afterwards the Memorial Day parade headed to the Civil War monument at the library. The Scoop on S.C.O.P.E. 263 viewsORRJHS 7th-grade students participated in the annual S.C.O.P.E. cardboard boat race at the beach at the Mattapoisett YMCA last Wednesday, June 20. The students engineer and build their boats – some sink, some sail – and this year team “Funky Monkey” came in first place. There were 15 boats in all this year, all created by teams of four.
