Marion 5K419 viewsApproximately 448 runners participated in the 14th Annual Marion Village 5K on June 26, 2010. The community race raised approximately $6,000 for the Marion Recreational Committee that maintains playground equipment, baseball fields and otherwise enhances the recreational opportunities in Marion. 22-year old Brendan Medeiros of Fall River finished in first place with a time of 16:47. Marion Natural History Museum419 viewsOn November 14, the Marion Natural History Museum's after-school group enjoyed learning about what it takes to become a geologist and a paleontologist. We tried out some of the equipment and discussed working conditions. We learned about the three different types of rocks – sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic, and how they form, and inspected various rocks and minerals and fossils presenter Jim Pierson has collected over the years.

Ready, Set, Go!418 viewsOn Sunday, March 21, 2010 The Marion Cub Scouts Pack 32 revived the annual soap-box derby after a three-year absence. Scouts raced carts down Holmes Street in Marion for a chance to help make their den the fastest in the pack. (Yuck!) Or a yellow birch? (Yum!) We learned about opposite and alternate leaf arrangement on a branch, what lenticels look like on a birch and a hickory, and that you can make tea out of sassafras.
