Marion Natural History Museum429 viewsOne hull or two? On March 11, the Marion Natural History Museum afterschool group explored the physics behind sailboat design. Mark Whalen, engineer with Massachusetts Maritime Academy, introduced several alternative design ideas for constructing our own sailboats. The students explored a variety of hull designs, mast locations and different sizes and shapes of sails. Then they raced the vessels in rain gutters to see which design moved fastest.

Cushing Post 2425 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Marion Natural History Museum428 viewsDespite the impending Polar Vortex, a small hardy group learned to identify some our local trees and shrubs in winter. Have you ever smelled a black cherry? (Yuck!) Or a yellow birch? (Yum!) We learned about opposite and alternate leaf arrangement on a branch, what lenticels look like on a birch and a hickory, and that you can make tea out of sassafras. Pizza with Santa428 viewsThe Marion Police Brotherhood held its annual Pizza with Santa at the Benjamin D. Cushing Community Center on Sunday, December 8. ‘Chief’ Santa and Mrs. Claus entertained the little ones before enjoying a pizza lunch. The Police Department’s “Fill a Cruiser” toy drive was in full gear as well, with several guests bringing toy donations to benefit children in foster care. Photos by Jean Perry
