Halloween Parade100 viewsThe streets of Marion were flooded with Halloween Parade participants and attendees, as members of the Sippican Elementary School Band helped the “witches” of the Marion Art Center lead a procession that began at the Music Hall and went down Front Street, up Main Street past the Elizabeth Taber statue and onto Spring Street, where children were met at Town House by staff members handing out candy for the kids. Scout Camp Fire100 viewsMarion Boy Scouts Troop 32 and Cub Scouts Pack 32 are in need of assistance after a March 8 brush fire destroyed buildings and equipment at Camp Hadley. Marion Fire reported on its Facebook page that the department received a 911 call for a brushfire that got away from an adjacent property owner. Engine No. 1 arrived to discover the fire had quickly spread to both of the outbuildings used by Camp Hadley. Mutual aid followed from Wareham, Mattapoisett and Rochester Fire departments,

Summer Reading Program100 viewsAs a kickoff to the summer reading program at the Elizabeth Taber Library and summer Natural History Museum programming, the Town of Marion was treated to a visit from a full-size whale, two very large dinosaurs and one baby dino named Spike. The Summer Block Party event held on June 24 started inside the Music Hall due to weather but later moved outside. The event also featured faux archeology digs and face painting. Marion Art Center100 viewsThe Marion Art Center held its annual Art in Bloom exhibition June 22-24 featuring floral arrangements inspired by the paintings of Stephen and Anne (Carrozza) Remick. Fifteen pieces coupled with art hanging on the gallery walls gave life to the spaces and included traditional flower-arranging techniques and imaginative fairy landscapes of tiny mosses. Marion Natural History Museum100 viewsOn November 15, the Marion Natural History Museum’s community group enjoyed a presentation on the geology of cranberry bogs with USDA soil scientist Maggie Payne. We heard about the glaciers that covered our area and left glacial moraines or hills in some areas of our state, as well as glacial outwash in our area. These outwash areas of sand and gravel can be extremely deep. Chunks of ice melting on the landscape turned into kettle ponds, which filled with groundwater and eventually plants.

Marion Museum of Natural History99 viewsThe Marion Museum of Natural History celebrated its 150th anniversary with a Friday night discussion on the 700-pound meteorite Coahuila, led by Mark Munkacsy. Later in the evening, Ted and Elizabeth Brainard visited Coahuila with Executive Director Liz Leidhold, while Treasurer Mike Cronin set up a telescope on the sidewalk out front of the Elizabeth Taber Library where attendees took turns viewing Jupiter and its moons.
