Marion Natural History Museum111 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum wishes to thank Officer David Wilson for the trip to view Bird Island to watch some of the unique birds that need the island for nesting. We saw plenty of terns catching fish and an Osprey hover and dive close to Ram Island. Officer Wilson also spent the time to show our kids how to tie up the boat we used and then helped us explore every inch of the patrol boat. Elizabeth Taber Library 111 viewsKids and their grown-up minders were scattered across the lawn in front of the Elizabeth Taber Library on July 11 when Pine Meadows Farms arrived with a variety of small animals delighting all. From pygmy goats to recently shorn alpacas and more, children learned some basic facts about the animals, but better yet for the toddler brigade, was getting up close to the animals. Arts in the Park110 viewsThe Marion Art Center’s annual “Arts in the Park” event was greeted by a gorgeous weekend, as cars lined Marion’s streets and visitors strolled through Bicentennial Park, ducking into the shade of white tents to visit the many artisans and their goods. Patrons enjoyed live music outside the Art Center on Main Street, refreshments from a food truck and even visited with Elizabeth Taber. Photos by Mick Colageo

Pumpkin Palooza110 viewsSaturday’s Pumpkin Palooza hosted by the Marion Council of Aging and the Recreation Department at the Cushing Community Center. Families decorated pumpkins, and children enjoyed face painting, a hula-hoop contest, dancing, a visit from Pine Meadow Farm animals and refreshments supported by Tabor Academy volunteers. Pumpkins were later illuminated, giving the pavilion an eerie weekend presence. Sixty-five families preregistered to participate in the event inspired by Marion citizen Dianne Cosman

St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church110 viewsOn February 21, St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church in Marion celebrated Fat Tuesday with a Mardi Gras party. We ate delicious food and played lots of great games. Many thanks to the Youth Group for all their hard work preparing the evening’s Louisiana-style foods and for leading the games. Marion Village Christmas Stroll110 viewsDespite eventual rain, the Marion Village Christmas Stroll was enjoyed by many on Sunday afternoon. The event included musical entertainment by Tri-County musicians, Grades 4 and 5 bands from Sippican Elementary School, Sippican Historical Society carolers and Tabor Academy students, horse-drawn carriage rides, street entertainment, seasonal refreshments courtesy of area merchants, goodie bags from VASE, and crafts for kids. Annawon Weeden110 viewsActor and activist Annawon Weeden spoke to a full house at the Marion Congregational Church on May 11. Sponsored by the Marion Art Center, Weeden spoke on all matters indigenous from languages to the creation story shared by many nations. Weeden also noted the use of wampum (created from quahog shells) to make jewelry and as a form of monetary exchange. Crocodile River Music110 viewsOn Saturday, May 17, as part of Art Week, the Marion Arts Center presented Crocodile River Music performing West African music and dance in Marion's Music Hall to an audience of about 70 people. A few children danced happily along with members of Crocodile River Music during several pieces. For the final piece of the event, almost everyone was up and dancing. The energy was terrific. Old Rochester junior Emerson Roy of Fairhaven sang “God Bless America,” ORR eighth-grader Sophie Zhou of Marion read The Gettysburg Address, and joining the march were the Sippican School Marching Band and Portuguese American Band, and the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of Marion, who led the Pledge of Allegiance.
