Halloween Parade129 viewsThe streets of Marion were flooded with Halloween Parade participants and attendees, as members of the Sippican Elementary School Band helped the “witches” of the Marion Art Center lead a procession that began at the Music Hall and went down Front Street, up Main Street past the Elizabeth Taber statue and onto Spring Street, where children were met at Town House by staff members handing out candy for the kids. Pumpkin Palooza129 viewsSaturday’s Pumpkin Palooza hosted by the Marion Council of Aging and the Recreation Department at the Cushing Community Center. Families decorated pumpkins, and children enjoyed face painting, a hula-hoop contest, dancing, a visit from Pine Meadow Farm animals and refreshments supported by Tabor Academy volunteers. Pumpkins were later illuminated, giving the pavilion an eerie weekend presence. Sixty-five families preregistered to participate in the event inspired by Marion citizen Dianne Cosman

Marion Veteran's Day129 viewsMarion resident and Technical Sergeant of the Massachusetts National Guard Mandy Givens was the keynote speaker at the town's Veterans Day ceremony on November 11 at Old Landing. Marion Natural History Museum 129 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum community group and the Nasketucket Bird Club had a wonderful birding walk on November 16 led by Justin Barrett. We were able to identify over 18 different species of birds including belted kingfishers, golden-crowned kinglets, and red-breasted Nuthatches. Blessing of the Fleet129 viewsThe Reverend Eric Fialho, rector at Saint Gabriel’s Parish, presided as the Town of Marion held its first-ever Blessing of the Fleet on January 1 in Sippican Harbor. One tradition well established the past half-dozen years was the sunflower in the outer harbor, where several vessels tied up to one another at the stern and aimed their bows outward toward the sea in 360-degree formation. Marion Natural History Museum129 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum’s afterschool group had a terrific time constructing their own rockets for launching. This program was so popular it had to be offered twice! The kids had a hands-on introduction to the engineering principles of propulsion and lift. Every rocket managed a successful launch hundreds of feet in the air, and most were safely carried down by the parachutes. Town of Marion Memorial Day129 viewsArmy veteran Charles Brown was the keynote speaker as the Town of Marion held its Memorial Day remembrance ceremonies on Monday morning with a procession from the Music Hall up Front Street to Old Landing, where Air Force Technical Sergeant Mandy Givens served as master of ceremonies that included an invocation by the Reverend Eric Osterday, the reading of “The Gettysburg Address” by Old Rochester Regional High School sophomore Amanda Tomasso of Mattapoisett, the reading of “In Flanders Fields”

Karen spoke about the various species of sea turtles we might see in our waters, including the massive Leatherback, the Loggerhead, and the much smaller Kemp's Ridley turtle. Some form galls, others go into a deep hibernation, some freeze solid, and others hide inside or under things like trees or leaves.
