Turtle253 viewsSome of the residents of Jenney Lane at The Cove in Marion have found a new passion in rescuing diamond-backed terrapin eggs and safely releasing the hatchlings into the wild. A private neighborhood group, along with “Turtle Guy” Don Lewis and wife Sue Weiber Nourse, created a terrapin habitat restoration project knows as the turtle garden at The Cove. Annual Turkey Trot 5K 253 viewsThe Annual Turkey Trot 5K wound its way through Marion Village on Sunday, November 17, with 182 trotters (and some ‘turkeys’ as well) braving a chilling wind that morning to make it to the finish line. Organized by the Marion Recreation Department, the event every year draws quite a flock of runners to the start and finish line at Tabor Academy, raising funds for Marion Rec programs and events. Pinewood Derby253 viewsThe Marion Cub Scout Pack 32 took part in its 2017 Pinewood Derby on Saturday, February 11. More than a dozen scouts took part in at least five races, with the fastest finishers pitted against each other down the stretch. Marion Holiday Stroll253 views It was all about Santa on December 10 for the annual Marion Holiday Stroll, although at first the Grinch stole the show (but not Christmas) until Santa made his big arrival at Town Wharf to the chanting of his name, stealing back from the Grinch his rightful place as the center of attention. Marion Natural History Museum253 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum after school group had a wonderful time exploring what works (and what doesn't) when constructing a wooden sailboat. The students constructed their own boat, either a single hull or catamaran, and added a sail and keel. After decorating their vessels, students raced the boats down two long rain gutters filled with water. Many thanks to engineer Mark Whalen for yet another terrific program! Marion Natural History Museum253 viewsOn Valentines Day, the Marion Natural History Museum's afterschool group had a chance to learn about humpback and right whales. Dr. Moore of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution showed the students how a drone may be used to observe a whale's spout to determine its health. We also had a chance to view bubble-netting practices of humpbacks, see how baleen plates fit in a whale's mouth, and discussed the hazards the whales face due to entanglements in fishing gear. Marion Fire Department 253 viewsSunday was a solemn day for the Tri-Town and its first responders as many gathered to honor Thomas Nye, 72, a 45-year veteran of the Marion Fire Department who died February 27 in the line of duty. Over 100 firefighters, police officers, and EMS personnel from the Tri-Town and beyond marched together down Route 6 in Mattapoisett on March 3 to pay their respects to their fallen comrade who suffered a cardiac arrest at home after assisting in a fire call the night before.
