4th Fireworks301 viewsDespite funding setbacks, the Marion fireworks took place this year at Silver Shell Beach under perfectly clear skies. Revelers enjoyed the patriotic music of Phil Sanborn and the Marion Concert Band while brilliant colors illuminated the harbor. Unless the town can secure a permanent source of funding, next year’s fireworks may be in jeopardy. Photo by Felix Perez.

Marion Natural History Museum301 viewsOn November 14, the Marion Natural History Museum's after-school group enjoyed learning about what it takes to become a geologist and a paleontologist. We tried out some of the equipment and discussed working conditions. We learned about the three different types of rocks – sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic, and how they form, and inspected various rocks and minerals and fossils presenter Jim Pierson has collected over the years.

Marion Natural History Museum301 viewsDespite the impending Polar Vortex, a small hardy group learned to identify some our local trees and shrubs in winter. Have you ever smelled a black cherry? (Yuck!) Or a yellow birch? (Yum!) We learned about opposite and alternate leaf arrangement on a branch, what lenticels look like on a birch and a hickory, and that you can make tea out of sassafras. Thank you to Sarah Porter for the great program. Photos courtesy Elizabeth Leidhold
