Mattapoisett Boatyard Fire44 viewsSmoke rose over Mattapoisett Harbor on August 19 after a boat caught fire during the replacement of a gasoline tank. An explosion followed by a raging fire leveled Mattapoisett Boatyard and destroyed the 14 boats and 47 vehicles on site. Members of the Kaiser family who own the business and members of the McLean family who founded the business surveyed the ruins on the weekend and vow to rebuild. Named after the Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., the preserve includes multiple trails spanning from Angelica Avenue out to Route 6 and in between a vernal pool that has served as an off-campus classroom for local students. This year, Buzzards Bay Coalition was chosen to be the recipient of their fundraising efforts, presenting the coalition with a check for $390.
