Marion Natural History Museum291 viewsHarbormaster's office for the opportunity to visit the newly refurbished Bird Island. We had the opportunity to see terns, geese, ducks, cormorants, and oystercatchers, as well as a trip to the top of the lighthouse. We viewed the changes that have been made to the island to make it more hospitable to the arriving tern population, which will be looking for a nesting habitat. Marion Natural History Museum290 viewsMany thanks to the Blue Hill Audubon's Trailside Museum and the Marion Cultural Council for the fun program last Friday night. Participants were able to get up close and personal with two very different looking Eastern box turtles, a spotted turtle, and a very long black rat snake. We also discussed timber rattlesnakes and how to properly pick up a turtle to help it get across the road safely. Be aware, they may get upset and emit some fluid onto your leg so best to hold at a distance from your body! May 03, 2017

Marion Natural History Museum226 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's after school group wishes to thank Rochester Herring Warden Dave Watling for sharing his knowledge of this important species. We covered the development of this anadromous species, its diet, and where it stands in the food chain. The students learned about herring eggs and how neutral buoyancy plays an important role in their development. Apr 19, 2017
