DESCRIPTION:The South Coast Children’s Chorus is welcoming new singers for the upcoming season. SCCC is open to all students from grades 1–12. Thanks to support from local cultural councils\, the South Coast Community Foundation and generous donors\, tuition is only $125 for the year\, and free or reduced tuition is available for any singer who requests it. \nThe first rehearsal will take place on Tuesday\, September 22. We welcome new singers during the first three weeks. Rehearsals take place on Tuesday nights\, 5:30 pm to 6:00 pm (Preparatory Chorus) and 6:00 to 7:00 pm (Advanced Chorus) at Tabor Academy in the Fireman Center for the Performing Arts\, 245 Front Street\, Marion. DESCRIPTION:The Marion Art Center welcomes Dennis Cook and Matt Richard to the Unplugged series on September 25. There will be two separate performances during the night\, and each set will last about an hour. Find a spot at a cabaret table upstairs at the MAC’s Patsy Francis Gallery to listen to a mix of jazz standards and original compositions by both artists. Guests will enjoy a refreshing setting at this “unplugged” performance featuring mainly acoustic sound\, without the volume and density often experienced during larger concerts. \nThe first seating is at 7:00 pm and the second seating is at 8:30 pm. Tickets are $15 for MAC members and $20 for nonmembers — more information and tickets at marionartcenter.org/events. \nJazz musician and educator Dennis Cook\, a native of Mansfield\, Massachusetts\, graduated from the Berklee College of Music in 1977 and studied with Joe Viola and Jerry Bergonzi. Cook’s most profound musical influences have been Miles Davis\, Joe Henderson\, Stan Getz and Dexter Gordon. Cook has toured with Dick Johnson and the Artie Shaw Orchestra\, Buddy Morrow and Terry Myers\, and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. He has performed with the Boston Pops Orchestra\, the Boston Symphony Orchestra\, The Temptations\, The Four Tops\, Carol Channing\, Pat Cooper\, Julius LaRosa\, Regis Philbin\, Bobby Rydell\, Connie Francis\, Don Rickles and many others. \nMatt Richard (jazz musician\, accompanist\, composer and arranger) has appeared on the Marion Art Center Jazz Unplugged series since 2023 with Donn Legge\, Dave Zinno\, Daniel Ian Smith\, Mike Rocha\, Dino Govoni\, and Paul Del Nero. Matt arranges a variety of music for the Buttonwood Brass Trio\, the Southcoast Brass Band\, and the Buzzards Bay Jazz Ensemble. Matt has performed throughout the New England area for the past 40 years as a soloist and accompanist with many different ensembles and musicians\, including Sheila Jordan\, Dick Johnson and the Artie Shaw Orchestra\, and Bombay Jim Porcella and the Swingin’ Sapphires. Matt played solo piano at The Roadhouse Cafe in Hyannis\, Massachusetts\, from 1997–2008 as well as joining Lou Colombo and Dick Johnson on the famous Monday Night Jazz Series from 2002–2008.

DESCRIPTION:The Sippican Rod & Gun Club is pleased to announce its annual NRA Women-On-Target program\, which will be held on Saturday\, September 26\, at 215 Dexter Lane in Rochester. The program will begin at 8:00 am and finish at 5:00 pm. The program’s morning session will teach the NRA Home Firearm Safety Course\, which qualifies participants to apply for a Massachusetts License to Carry (LTC) or Firearms Identification (FID) card. Following a catered\, healthy lunch\, we will provide participants with practical and safe shooting experiences by rotating through the club’s pistol range\, 50- and 100-yard rifle ranges\, and shotgun trap range. The $110 fee includes all training materials\, eye and ear protection (which will be yours to keep)\, use of the club facility\, morning snacks\, lunch\, ammunition\, and use of firearms. SUMMARY:The Work of Pamela Dorris DeJong & Sky Hoyt
DESCRIPTION:The Marion Art Center will exhibit the work of artists Pamela Dorris DeJong and Sky Hoyt from September 26 through October 30. The opening reception will be held on Saturday\, September 26 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm at 80 Pleasant St.\, Marion. More information can be found at marionartcenter.org/on-exhibit. \nPamela Dorris DeJong is a mixed-media artist whose work brings together healing\, environmental awareness\, and the luminous qualities of layered painting. Drawing on her background in pediatric nursing\, art education\, Reiki and years of plein air and mixed-media practice\, she creates work that invites viewers to notice beauty\, consider new perspectives and reflect on the relationship between art\, healing and the natural world. Through mixed media\, Pamela explores healing\, environmental concerns\, and the act of recording this moment in time. \nPamela is drawn to translucent\, layered surfaces and atmospheric conditions that create wavering\, vibrant color. Years of plein air painting and travel have deepened her connection to land and waterscapes\, while experimentation with encaustic and other media has led her toward luminous work embedded with found objects and metals. \nArtscope Magazine has described Pamela’s work as “not stopping merely at transforming materials” but as exploring “the healing properties in physical\, psychological and relational concepts through the process of artmaking” noting that its “intricately layered\, powerful colors and engaging texture” communicate on many levels. \nSky Hoyt is a Connecticut-based artist. She received her BA in Visual Art from Bennington College and continued her studies at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris and the Art Students League of New York\, as well as through workshops at Ox-Bow and Anderson Ranch Arts Center. \nOriginally trained as an oil painter\, Hoyt began with traditional still life and gradually developed the layered\, mixed-media approach that characterizes her work today. Her undergraduate study of ceramics continues to inform her interest in vessels — their shapes\, histories and uses — as recurring forms within her paintings. \nHoyt is represented by Anne Irwin Fine Art in Atlanta\, Georgia. Her work has been exhibited in Boston and throughout Connecticut\, including at the University of Connecticut’s Alexey von Schlippe Gallery. Her work has also been selected for the U.S. Department of State’s Art in Embassies program and featured in House Beautiful.

DESCRIPTION:An Hour with Eleanor\, written and performed by Cynthia Krause\, will take place at the Mattapoisett Congregational Church on Saturday\, September 26 at 4:00 pm. \n“I was a little controversial\,” so says Eleanor Roosevelt in her opening greeting in An Hour with Eleanor. This one-woman play was the winner of the 2022–23 Marion Art Center Playwriting Incubator Contest. Eleanor journeys from a shy\, lonely child to a world-renowned U.N. human rights advocate. We see her struggle from her days at a French boarding school to leading the suffragette movement\, fighting for an eight-hour\, five-day work week\, teaching civil rights workshops and traveling to the islands of the South Pacific to carry messages home for the thousands of troops during World War II. Born in the Victorian Age\, Eleanor blossomed into one of the most beloved and remarkable First Ladies of all time. Surprisingly\, the Grand Dame of midcentury America says\, in her self-effacing manner\, “My job was to be useful.” The history is all there\, revealed in the emotions of this great lady. Come.
