DESCRIPTION:The Mattapoisett Woman’s Club extends a warm invitation to the women of Mattapoisett and the surrounding Tri-Town area who would enjoy becoming involved in a season filled with social\, civic\, philanthropic\, educational and community outreach activities. Whether you are new to the area\, looking to meet new friends\, or simply interested in becoming more involved in the community\, we would love to welcome you. \nOur new season begins on Thursday\, September 17\, at 11:00 am at Reynaud Hall at the Mattapoisett Congregational Church. We will begin with an opportunity to socialize and reconnect. At this first meeting\, there will be no guest speaker\, as we will use the time for club business\, introducing some new communication techniques\, and familiarizing members with our current activities and plans for the year. It will be a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the club and get to know us. \nThroughout the year\, our programs feature a wonderful variety of speakers and topics\, including authors\, gardeners\, local historians of the South Coast\, cooking\, and many other interesting subjects. Except for our September luncheon\, which is a potluck\, our luncheons are hosted by our Tea Committees. Each member is assigned a month to help with preparing and hosting the luncheon\, making these gatherings a wonderful way to work together and enjoy each other’s company. In December\, we traditionally enjoy a special luncheon off-site\, often at Century House in Acushnet\, and our Annual Meeting is typically held at an off-site location as well. \nIn addition to our monthly meetings and luncheons\, the club offers a variety of activities and interest groups\, including Book Club\, Mah Jong in conjunction with the COA\, a crafting group\, Garden Club\, Ladies Who Lunch\, and Bridge\, which is currently in transition. We believe there is something for everyone\, and if there is an activity you would enjoy that we don’t currently offer\, we believe it can be created. \nPlease join us on Thursday\, September 17\, at 11:00 am at Reynaud Hall and come see what the Mattapoisett Woman’s Club is all about. Knowing your voting rights is critical so we can support everyone in our community and in our country. Learn what we need to do and what the ACLU does to protect this important aspect of our democracy. Regardless of political affiliation\, all are welcome to learn and participate in this discussion. \nThe ACLU’s mission is to defend and expand civil rights and personal freedoms. Their legal team goes to court to protect issues such as free speech\, due process\, and equal protection under the law. Their policy team works with elected officials at the state and local levels. Their field team does community rights organizing and public education. \nThe ACLU is a nonprofit and nonpartisan. They don’t take money from the government\, and they don’t endorse candidates\, so they are free to hold everyone to account. Cook’s most profound musical influences have been Miles Davis\, Joe Henderson\, Stan Getz and Dexter Gordon. Cook has toured with Dick Johnson and the Artie Shaw Orchestra\, Buddy Morrow and Terry Myers\, and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. He has performed with the Boston Pops Orchestra\, the Boston Symphony Orchestra\, The Temptations\, The Four Tops\, Carol Channing\, Pat Cooper\, Julius LaRosa\, Regis Philbin\, Bobby Rydell\, Connie Francis\, Don Rickles and many others. \nMatt Richard (jazz musician\, accompanist\, composer and arranger) has appeared on the Marion Art Center Jazz Unplugged series since 2023 with Donn Legge\, Dave Zinno\, Daniel Ian Smith\, Mike Rocha\, Dino Govoni\, and Paul Del Nero. Matt arranges a variety of music for the Buttonwood Brass Trio\, the Southcoast Brass Band\, and the Buzzards Bay Jazz Ensemble. Matt has performed throughout the New England area for the past 40 years as a soloist and accompanist with many different ensembles and musicians\, including Sheila Jordan\, Dick Johnson and the Artie Shaw Orchestra\, and Bombay Jim Porcella and the Swingin’ Sapphires. Matt played solo piano at The Roadhouse Cafe in Hyannis\, Massachusetts\, from 1997–2008 as well as joining Lou Colombo and Dick Johnson on the famous Monday Night Jazz Series from 2002–2008.

The program’s morning session will teach the NRA Home Firearm Safety Course\, which qualifies participants to apply for a Massachusetts License to Carry (LTC) or Firearms Identification (FID) card. Following a catered\, healthy lunch\, we will provide participants with practical and safe shooting experiences by rotating through the club’s pistol range\, 50- and 100-yard rifle ranges\, and shotgun trap range. This one-woman play was the winner of the 2022–23 Marion Art Center Playwriting Incubator Contest. Eleanor journeys from a shy\, lonely child to a world-renowned U.N. human rights advocate. We see her struggle from her days at a French boarding school to leading the suffragette movement\, fighting for an eight-hour\, five-day work week\, teaching civil rights workshops and traveling to the islands of the South Pacific to carry messages home for the thousands of troops during World War II. Born in the Victorian Age\, Eleanor blossomed into one of the most beloved and remarkable First Ladies of all time. Surprisingly\, the Grand Dame of midcentury America says\, in her self-effacing manner\, “My job was to be useful.” The history is all there\, revealed in the emotions of this great lady. Come.
