SUMMARY:Mattapoisett Road Race
DESCRIPTION:With less than 2 months until the 4th of July\, it’s time to lace up your sneakers and get ready to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence by running the Mattapoisett Road Race\, “4 on the 4th.” When this tradition was started in 1971 by Bob and Doris Gardner\, 15 runners raced from Point Connett to Shipyard Park. Over the years\, the route has changed a few times\, and now\, over 1000 runners start at Shipyard Park\, run through the village\, around Ned’s Point lighthouse\, and finish at Shipyard Park. Townspeople line the course and cheer on the runners. Proceeds from the race are used to fund awards for college-bound senior athletes from Old Rochester Regional High School\, as well as support Old Rochester athletics. Over the years\, more than $200\,000 has been given to deserving students from Mattapoisett\, Marion and Rochester. Registration for the race is online only\, up until 8:30 am on July 4. Until July 1\, the registration fee is $25\, on July 2\, 3 and 4\, it is $35. T-shirt and number pickup is from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm on July 3\, and 7:30-8:30 am on July 4. \nRunners are strongly urged to pick up their shirts and numbers on July 3 to avoid long lines on the morning of the race. DESCRIPTION:Saturday July 4\, Happy Birthday America – Beginning at 1:00 pm there will be bus tours leaving from Center School and touring the original center of Mattapoisett. The Mattapoisett Historical Museum will be guide\, who will share interesting stories and point out landmarks and places of interest from the early 1700’s\, some of which are still standing. Each tour will be approximately 30 – 40 minutes. \nThe museum will be open to the public sharing their considerable collection of Mattapoisett life\, some of which predates the establishment of the United States of America. \nMattapoisett Firefighters’ Memories – Before the onset of internet communications Mattapoisett was blessed with citizens who responded to emergency calls for help in the event of fires and other serious unexpected situations. They were willing to leave families\, jobs and anything else to protect the citizens of this town and local communities that needed extra help. Beginning at 2:00 pm in the tent on the corner of Church and Baptist St. there will be a gathering of some of those dedicated to the safety of this town without access to so many of the advanced equipment available to our Fire Department today. A panel discussion with several retired call firefighters who served our community prior to the introduction of computerized emergency notification systems. An exhibition featuring antique and obsolete firefighting equipment will be available. Afternoon events will finish between 4:00 pm and 4:30 pm. \nIntergenerational family line dancing on the wharf -Beginning at 6:30 pm\, Bootin An Scootin with Sarah T. will lead us in country line dancing and trivia question entertainment under the night sky.

Fireflies evoke a feeling of magic and wonder; Elegant blobs of light dancing and blinking in the summer night. Everything about fireflies hearkens back to a time long past. Imagine living on Earth 75-130 million years ago. Dinosaurs tromping and roaming. The air is hot and humid. There are no cars\, no city lights\, no porch lights\, no stadium lights. Nothing. But\, it isn’t pitch black\, because the stars fill the sky. It will still be millions of years before humans create the first artificial light sources to change all of this. But\, their elaborate light displays are not intended for our eyes. Instead\, they depict a daring dance between species. Each firefly species possesses its own distinct type of “language” used to communicate with members of its own species. If you can decode these patterns\, you can figure out which species you’re looking at. There are an estimated 170 species in North America. But\, fewer people report seeing fireflies today. DESCRIPTION:The Buzzards Bay Musicfest continues its five-concert series with performances throughout the week of July 15 to July 19. On Friday\, July 17\, the Buzzards Bay Musicfest Swing Band will delve into Music from the Movies with a sampling of compositions from the pens of some of the elite Hollywood composers. The nine piece “little big band” will offer selections that demonstrate the varied approaches to songs from the feature films “A Rainy Day in New York”\, “On Green Dolphin Street”\, “Midnight in Paris”\, “The Wizard of Oz” and many more. The arrangements will present the music with a tasteful combination of well-voiced ensemble passages and improvised solos. The Buzzards Bay Musicfest Swing Band is comprised of some of the finest jazz musicians in New England. Since its inception in 2017\, the BBMF Swing Band has performed at each festival to enthusiastic audiences with programs that have been well-received. DESCRIPTION:Please join together this July 18\, at 10:00 am\, when the Mattapoisett Museum\, the Public Library and the Lions Club will host a reading of the Declaration of Independence as part of Harbor Days and the town’s 250th Celebration. It will take place at the Gazebo in Shipyard Park. \nOn July 4\, 1776\, Congress approved the text of the official Declaration of Independence and sent it to John Dunlap\, a Philadelphia printer\, who worked through the night printing copies to distribute. Word spread outward to the colonies at the speed of horsepower. \nOn July 18\, 1776\, Col. Thomas Crafts read the Declaration from the balcony of the State House in Boston for the first time in the Commonwealth. Many of the city’s citizens gathered in King Street to hear the proclamation. Abigail Adams\, who was present in the crowd\, described the scene in a letter to her husband: “Great attention was given to every word. As soon as Col. Crafts ended\, the cry from the balcony was ‘God save our American States’ and then three cheers which rended the air.” \nReaders are Rep. Mark Silvia\, State Representative for the 10th Bristol District\, Frances Feliz-Kearns\, Select Board of Mattapoisett\, Jenny Martin\, Director of the Mattapoisett Free Public Library and Connor Gaudet\, Curator\, Mattapoisett Museum. \nTogether the citizens of the SouthCoast will “rend the air” with their own three cheers.

Most burn harmlessly in our atmosphere as brilliant meteors\, but occasionally a larger object creates a spectacular fireball and even a sonic boom. In this talk\, we’ll explore where asteroids come from\, how they differ from meteors and meteorites\, what scientists have learned from studying these ancient remnants of the solar system\, and how they have shaped Earth’s history. We’ll also examine the recent meteor that exploded off the coast of Massachusetts\, using this dramatic local event to understand what happens when space rocks encounter Earth’s atmosphere\, how scientists investigate these events\, and what they tell us about our dynamic solar system.
