SUMMARY:America 250 Author Talk: Patriots of the South Coast
DESCRIPTION:Plumb Library and the Rochester Historical Society are excited to be hosting local author Robert Barboza on Saturday\, May 9 at noon to talk about his latest book: Patriots of the South Coast. He will be talking about South Coast soldiers\, sailors\, and ship builders who played important roles in the American Revolution\, including two senior officers in the American Revolution who were from Rochester. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event\, and refreshments will be provided courtesy of the Rochester Historical Society. This event is free – please save your seat by registering on the library’s online Events Calendar today. \nRetired journalist and local history researcher Robert Barboza has published a second book about South Coast soldiers\, sailors\, and ship builders who played important roles in the American Revolution (1775 – 1783)\, Patriots of the South Coast. \nThe 140-page book is a collection of newspaper articles on Revolutionary War history printed over the years in area publications\, revised and expanded with new research materials. The new book is a follow-up to his first book on local history in the War for Independence from Great Britain\, Patriots of Old Dartmouth: Local Heroes of the Revolutionary War\, published in 2014 to help celebrate the 350th anniversary of the town’s incorporation. \nFor the past two decades\, Mr. Barboza has often lectured locally about the region’s Patriot heroes such as Continental Marine Captain Stephen Earl of Westport; Fairhaven militia captain Nathaniel Pope\, who led a 1775 raid to capture the Royal Navy sloop Falcon in Dartmouth waters; and Captain Job Tripp of Dartmouth\, wounded and cast ashore far from home after his merchant vessel was battered by cannon fire from a British warship. \nThe new volume was assembled and published in time to coincide with the ongoing nationwide celebration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, starting in 2025. His goal was to ensure that these little-known local stories were collected and preserved for posterity as part of the permanent historical record of the South Coast. \nMr. Barboza is the former editor of Dartmouth’s weekly newspaper\, The Chronicle\, and served as a correspondent for many other South Coast newspapers over the years. He has been a student of local history for 20 years\, and authored dozens of articles on local history during his long journalism career. Two of those articles won awards from the New England Press Association for historical reporting. \nHe currently serves on the board of directors for the Dartmouth Historical & Arts Society\, and formerly served on the board of directors for the Dartmouth Heritage Preservation Trust\, which helped subsidize the publication of his first book on local history.

DESCRIPTION:Old Rochester Regional High School Drama Club will light up the ORRHS stage on Mother’s Day weekend May 7 to 10 with “Mamma Mia.” Mr. Brayden Fanti is thrilled to be directing his sixth production with the ORRHS Drama Club and this will be the second ORRDC show for Assistant Director\, Vanessa Medeiros. Music is performed by a live orchestra under direction of Pedro Silva & Jenna Champagne and choreography is by Jocelyn Ulloa. \nSet on a Greek island\, “Mamma Mia!” is a high-energy musical built around the iconic songs of ABBA. The action begins as Sophie (Fiona Roveda) is about to get married but has a mystery to unravel. She doesn’t know the true identity of her father. After secretly reading her mother Donna’s (Amanda Tomasso) old diary\, Sophie invites three gentlemen from Donna’s past to the wedding hoping to finally uncover the truth. Is it Bill (Liam Osterday)\, Sam (Linden White)\, or Harry (Lucas Cabral)? Chaos\, comedy\, and heartfelt moments follow as all three arrive\, each potentially her dad\, without Donna knowing what Sophie has done. The story unfolds with ABBA’s legendary hits like “Dancing Queen\,” “Super Trouper\,” “Take a Chance on Me\,” and more classics turning every twist into a musical celebration. Driven by a number of biological\, physical\, and chemical processes\, understanding what makes up a salt marsh\, is not always as clear as understanding the services they provide. Salt marshes support communities from the local to global level by providing critical wildlife habitat\, continuous carbon storage\, and coastal infrastructure protection. However\, salt marshes\, and the services they provide\, are threatened by legacy impacts and complex modern stressors. \nJoin Callista Macpherson from Buzzards Bay Coalition as she discusses what defines a salt marsh and the ongoing efforts to protect and restore them.

DESCRIPTION:The Mattapoisett Land Trust invites you to an afternoon with Peter Trull to learn more about our fascinating neighbor\, the eastern coyote. This free event will be held Saturday May 16 at 1pm at the Mattapoisett Friends Meeting House\, 103 Marion Road (Rt 6) Mattapoisett. \nEastern Coyotes are a wild canid whose genetic make-up has been shown to be a combination of two species of wolves\, western coyotes and domestic dogs. While most people refer to them as “Coyotes”\, they are not the animal of the western deserts. It is truly a “canid soup”. Eastern coyotes or “Coywolves” are found throughout Massachusetts and eastern North America. Peter Trull has been studying the daily habits and life history of the eastern coyote Canis latrans var. since 1989. On Cape Cod and throughout New England\, with diverse yet diminishing habitats\, and a growing human population\, eastern coyotes still thrive and are evident to us in our yards and neighborhoods year-round. They are not well understood by most people\, and their presence may cause alarm and disdain among a large part of the population. His aim as researcher and educator is to offer an objective view of this wild canid\, clarify the many misconceptions\, and inform his audiences\, young and old\, of this predator’s place in our world\, and our place in the coyote’s world. This Program/Lecture will include colorful and informative photographs\, as well as the most up to date information on genetics and taxonomy of the eastern coyote or coywolf. \nPeter Trull has been involved in Research and Education for 50 years. He coordinated seabird protection and research for the Massachusetts Audubon Society. As Education Director at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History\, he developed programs and began studying Eastern Coyotes in 1989. He holds a Master’s Degree in Education. DESCRIPTION:The Town of Marion invites the community to join volunteers at Evergreen Cemetery\, Marion\, on Saturday\, May 23 at 9:00 am to plant geraniums at veterans’ graves. \nThe 2026 Memorial Day Remembrances and Procession will take place on Monday\, May 25 starting at 9:00 am in front of the Music Hall at 164 Front Street\, Marion. In the event of rain\, the event will be relocated to the Multipurpose Room of Sippican Elementary School. \nThis is the same route as in past years\, stepping off from the Music Hall northbound on Front Street\, marching 0.6 miles up Front Street to the Veterans’ Memorial at Old Landing.  Upon arrival at the Veterans’ Memorial the town will pay tribute to our military’s “honored dead” who “gave the last full measure of devotion”. \nThe Sippican School Marching Band led by director Hannah Moore as well as The Portuguese American Band will perform selections of music. The ceremony will conclude with members of the Select Board laying a wreath at the Veterans’ Memorial at Old Landing. The master of ceremonies for the event will be Technical Sergeant Mandy Givens of the Massachusetts Air National Guard. \nResidents are encouraged to attend the remembrances as well as stand along the parade route on Front Street between Cottage Street and Ryder Lane.
