Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Plunge450 viewsIt takes a certain type of person to jump into the cold ocean on New Year’s morning. Behold, the locals who fit that description as they enjoy a frosty January 1st at Mattapoisett Town Beach for the annual Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Plunge! Hundreds lined the beach to take the plunge, with bundled spectators watching from the sidelines and cheering as the plungers charged ahead screaming and shrieking with exhilaration. Proceeds from the plunge benefit locals battling cancer. Photos by Colin Veitch

Living History 450 viewsIt looked like July 8, 1776 at Silvershell Beach in Marion this past Saturday. Folks from the Fairhaven Village Militia and Wareham Militia Group in conjunction with Marion Recreation and the Marion Cultural Council took spectators back in time to Colonial Massachusetts during a weekend-long encampment at the beach. Participants in olde-tyme apparel demonstrated what life was like in the 1770s during the Revolutionary War through demonstrations of drilling, cooking, and flintlock musket use. Photos by Jean

A Sacred Space 450 viewsThe Town of Marion celebrated the grand opening of the Benjamin D. Cushing Community Center on August 12 with an Open House, welcoming the general public to view the results of a months-long renovation that converted the old VFW Post #2425 building into a center for seniors and all residents to enjoy. The VFW post donated the building to the Town after it disbanded last year. Photos by Jean Perry

Alpacapalooza! 450 viewsPine Meadows Farm in Mattapoisett is home to some 17 alpacas. Owners Heidi and Jeff Paine opened up the farm to the public over the weekend once the weather cleared. Saturday the alpacas were still drying off from the rain, but by Sunday their fleece was again fluffy and soft. Photos by Jean Perry

Tractor Pull450 viewsThe NEATTA enjoyed a gorgeous fall day in Rochester for its annual fall tractor pulling event on Saturday at the Rochester Country Fair grounds that were once again, albeit briefly, filled with the familiar sights, sounds, and smells of diesel smoke we all expect from a good day at the tractor pulls! Turkey Trot 5K 450 viewsSunday was the morning of the annual Turkey Trot 5K in the center of Marion. Yes, it was rainy and windy, but the 80 turkeys (we mean participants) that showed up anyway still enjoyed the scenic village trot. Photos by Glenn C. Silva

Holiday in the Park450 viewsIt looked like another record turnout at Shipyard Park in Mattapoisett on December 9 for the annual Holiday in the Park and tree lighting. The tent was stuffed with hot foods, cocoa, donuts, Christmas cookies, and the hundreds of people in line to warm up out of the snowy cold. Did you miss the tree lighting? See The Wanderer Facebook page for a video capturing the magical moment. Photos by Jean Perry

Freezin’ for a Reason450 viewsJanuary 1 found locals Freezin’ for a Reason again at the annual polar plunge fundraiser to benefit those who are fighting cancer in our own community. At Mattapoisett Town Beach that morning, the air temperature was in the single digits and the water was a frigid 40 degrees. Photos by Glenn C. Silva
