The pinewood derby is a tradition that was started back in 1963 in Manhattan Beach, California and persists to this day. Students compared red cedar bark to red pine, took a close look at various lichens and mosses that use tree bark as a surface to grow on, and counted rings in a log supplied by Hartley Saw Mill in Rochester.
