Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Plunge434 viewsIt takes a certain type of person to jump into the cold ocean on New Year’s morning. Behold, the locals who fit that description as they enjoy a frosty January 1st at Mattapoisett Town Beach for the annual Freezin’ for a Reason Polar Plunge! Hundreds lined the beach to take the plunge, with bundled spectators watching from the sidelines and cheering as the plungers charged ahead screaming and shrieking with exhilaration. Proceeds from the plunge benefit locals battling cancer. Photos by Colin Veitch

Volunteers Bruce MacPhail, Mike Bare, Art Benner, Noreen Hartley, Mike Hugeunin, Bob Lawrence, and Pete Stroud have made quite a dent thus far, and quite a lot of piles. Plans are to complete cutting and disposal of trees this spring. Volunteers are welcome, call 508-675-LAND (5263) or email info@rochesterlandtrust.

Living History 434 viewsIt looked like July 8, 1776 at Silvershell Beach in Marion this past Saturday. Folks from the Fairhaven Village Militia and Wareham Militia Group in conjunction with Marion Recreation and the Marion Cultural Council took spectators back in time to Colonial Massachusetts during a weekend-long encampment at the beach. Participants in olde-tyme apparel demonstrated what life was like in the 1770s during the Revolutionary War through demonstrations of drilling, cooking, and flintlock musket use. Photos by Jean
