Doggie Walk-A-Thon466 viewsThe Doggie Walk-A-Thon held on August 26 in Mattapoisett village is the brainchild of Freemin Bauer, whose dream is to one day create a dog park in town. Bauer’s dog walk-a-thon last year for his Boy Scout Eagle project raised money to make repairs to the Fairhaven Animal Shelter. This year, he raised money towards a dog park.

Tabor Academy Polar Plunge466 viewsTabor Academy hosted its second annual Polar Plunge on Sunday, January 21 at Silvershell Beach to raise money for the school’s Special Olympics Young Athletes Program. Students from ‘fundraising rival’ Sandwich High also showed up, with scores of students and staff making a dash in and quickly out of the chilly waters. The plunge raised about $8,000. Marion Natural History Museum466 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum’s afterschool group had a chance to learn to identify certain local trees in winter by their bark. Students compared red cedar bark to red pine, took a close look at various lichens and mosses that use tree bark as a surface to grow on, and counted rings in a log supplied by Hartley Saw Mill in Rochester.

Marion Natural History Museum466 viewsOn Wednesday, the Marion Natural History Museum after-school group had fun inspecting some of the residents of vernal pools. With the use of magnifying glasses, we studied wood frog and salamander egg masses, log-cabin caddis-fly larvae, tadpoles, and various bugs. All specimens were returned to their original pool and now the students can recognize and, hopefully, protect these animals in the future. We also had a chance to handle some sphagnum moss and took a close look at the plant's structure to see why
