Marion Art Center Show508 viewsThe Marion Art Center unveiled its new show in a special opening reception at the gallery on Friday, January 11. The 2013 Winter Members Exhibition features over 60 works by about 30 local artists, some well-known and some new to the local art scene. This is the first of two bi-annual shows that showcase work by members of MAC, from oil paintings to multi-media. Check out some of the great art work being created by Tri-Town artists. This annual event is sugar on the plums for anyone who appreciates live music. The combined voices and instruments of over 60 performers filled the church with pitch perfect music telling the story of Jesus’ birth. Freezin' for a Reason 2014508 viewsParticipants in the 2014 Polar Plunge on January 1 were encouraged to wear costumes for the event, which raised thousands of dollars for the BAM Foundation. BAM is an organization that offers financial assistance to families battling cancer to help offset the unexpected costs of cancer treatment. Hundreds of people turned out for the event, with over a hundred participants who plunged into 34 degree waters, just a few degrees warmer than the 28 degree air temperature that morning. This annual event raises funds for Helping Hands and Hooves, a nonprofit organization in Mattapoisett that provides horseback riding lessons and therapeutic sessions for people with special needs. Build-your-own Snowman508 viewsUnder the direction of Jeanne McCullough, children at the Mattapoisett Free Library on December 30 participated in a step-by-step build-your-own snowperson activity during the winter school break. Little fingers sticky with glue flattened out cotton balls and fastened them to prefabricated Styrofoam snowperson shapes, and then glued on the trimmings under the guidance of caregivers.
