Santa boarded a horse-drawn carriage and paraded through the streets, passing businesses offering free goodies and dodging the whereabouts of that old Grinch who didn’t seem to mind Christmas coming at all this year. Heathers408 views“Heathers: The Musical (High School Edition)” is Tabor Academy’s pick for this year’s winter musical opening on Thursday, February 14, and running through Saturday, February 16. The shows start at 7:30 pm at Tabor’s Fireman Center for the Performing Arts in Hoyt Hall at 245 Front Street, Marion. Marion Fire Department 408 viewsSunday was a solemn day for the Tri-Town and its first responders as many gathered to honor Thomas Nye, 72, a 45-year veteran of the Marion Fire Department who died February 27 in the line of duty. Over 100 firefighters, police officers, and EMS personnel from the Tri-Town and beyond marched together down Route 6 in Mattapoisett on March 3 to pay their respects to their fallen comrade who suffered a cardiac arrest at home after assisting in a fire call the night before. The show stars Lilah Gendreau as night club singer Reno Sweeney, Eddie Gonet IV as Wall Street broker Billy Crocker, Brianna Lynch as the unhappily-engaged Hope Harcourt, Paul Kippenberger as Hope’s wealthy fiancé Lord Evelyn Oakleigh, Luke Couto as “Public Enemy Number 13” Moonface Martin, and Kate Marsden as the ostentatious Erma.

An audience watched the two throw poems like punches during the MAC’s May 3 event, “Dickinson vs. Whitman, the Poetry Knockout!” Stephen Collins was back in the Tri-Town as Walt Whitman, facing off against the Tri-Town’s own Annemarie Fredericks in poetic fisticuffs.

While half the students head off for Survival, the others enjoy a week of equally challenging tasks of the 40-year tradition of SCOPE that gives students a chance to learn while learning about themselves and each other. Marion Natural History Museum408 viewsOn June 7, the Marion Natural History Museum hosted a talk by Dr. Kaeli of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) on the challenges and eventual triumph of finding a 300+ year old shipwreck. Kaeli described the science behind the underwater robot – REMUS (Remote Environmental Monitoring UnitS) – and how it helped WHOI scientists discover the "holy grail" of shipwrecks, the San Jose.
