BLM Rochester520 viewsA “Black Lives Matter” protest march drew hundreds to Rochester late in the afternoon of June 12. Escorted by several Rochester policemen on foot, participants who had gathered in front of Town Hall marched down Dexter Lane to the police station, where several individuals spoke about racism and told stories of discrimination based on skin color. Chest Returns519 viewsBeth Mills stands in front of the pine and mahogany chest of drawers made by her grandfather, Charles Johnson, who was an undertaker and cabinet-maker in Mattapoisett at the turn of the 20th century. The chest of drawers remained with her until she passed away in 2008 at the age of 99. Her friends John and Caroline Belloti contacted the Mattapoisett Historical Society after her passing to fulfill her wish that the chest remain with the Mattapoisett Museum, just around the corner from where it was made.

Multicultural Festival 519 viewsThe local AFS (American Field Service) held a multicultural festival on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at the Center School in Mattapoisett. The festival included several stations that displayed information about different cultures from around the world. Exchange students from Thailand, Panama and Northern Germany also enjoyed the festivities. Hillbilly Hoedown519 viewsA Hillbilly Dinner Dance was held at Redman Hall in Wareham on Saturday, February 27, 2010 to benefit the 11th annual Rochester Country Fair. After dinner, Twinkies were provided for dessert and The Relics provided music. Zumbathon519 viewsThe ORR high school gymnasium was alive with music and movement on Sunday, April 11, 2010, when dancers took to the floor for a good cause. For a $30 contribution, participants could Zumba for three hours, and the proceeds of the Zumbathon went to Compassionate Care for ALS in Falmouth, a non-profit organization that provides equipment and support to families affected by ALS. The Zumbathon was in honor of Jeffrey Lawrence, a 47-year-old man living with ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).

Harbor Craze519 viewsThe town gazebo was the scene of another sultry Harbor Days this past weekend. Rows of vendors peddled their fun wares while visitors of all ages enjoyed music, conversation and the best strawberry shortcake in the world.
