Marion Natural History Museum420 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's afterschool group enjoyed learning the history of the Bird Island lighthouse and viewing the return of the birds to the island. We spotted roseate terns, common terns, oyster catchers, some unhappy Canadian geese, and a nesting mallard duck. We also learned about the recent restoration efforts made by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife to improve drainage and provide adequate nesting habitat for the returning birds. Firefighters Memorial 420 viewsEight firefighters – four from Rochester – followed bagpiper Iain Massie to the Firefighters Memorial the morning of 8/24 to begin the inaugural four-day, 316-mile long Southern New England Brotherhood Ride, organized by Rochester Firefighter Andy Weigel. Marion Town Party420 viewsChalk up another successful Marion Town Party as several hundred party-goers found good food and fun on the grounds of the Town House on 8/25. Children of all ages enjoyed inflatable games, climbing the rock wall, or jumping around to music. The annual party has its roots deep in the community and may have started as early at 1900. This year’s event featured live entertainment, a scavenger hunt, and lots of good food.

Sharing the Harvest420 viewsOn September 25, 70 Old Hammondtown School 6th-graders went to "Sharing the Harvest," a volunteer-staffed farm at the Dartmouth YMCA that grows and distributes fresh food to local food banks. Students processed thousands of pounds of butternut squash, prepared seedling trays, planted garlic for next year's harvest, and unearthed sweet potatoes, despite the rain. Marion Natural History Museum420 viewsOn November 28, the Marion Natural History Museum's afterschool group hosted Manny da Costa, a watershed scientist from Inter-fluve. Da Costa discussed some river restoration projects and taught about the importance of rivers for fish passage and water quality for our watershed. Student groups worked on problems involving hydrology, fish passage, riparian (rivers), and shellfish, and came up with some great ideas for protecting our watershed.
