Disaster Drill421 viewsFairhaven Fire Department hosted a full-scale exercise to improve emergency response in the region. Mattapoisett, Rochester, Dartmouth, Freetown, Acushnet, and New Bedford all responded to a disaster that simulated an accident between a school bus and an oil truck at Livesey Park in Fairhaven. Rachel's Challenge421 viewsMattapoisett grade school students sat with rapt attention on November 9, 2009 as they learned about Rachel Scott. Rachel's life was taken in the Columbine High School shootings, but her legacy of kindness lives on in the "Rachel's Challenge" program, which is designed to promote compassion among children. Artist Visit421 viewsOn November 19, Author/Illustrator Teresa Flavin visited each of Mattapoisett Center School’s third grade classes. Ms. Flavin is the illustrator of Joseph Bruchac’s play Pushing Up the Sky featured in the 3rd Graders reading book. Her presentation included showing the students original sketches and artwork from her books, discussing the processes involved in creating artwork for publication and a short hands-on drawing project.

Santa Arrives421 viewsMattapoisett held its annual holiday celebration and tree lighting on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at Shipyard Park. The rain couldn't dampen holiday spirits as visitors enjoyed delicious food and listened to Christmas music performed by the Showstoppers. Children made their own ornaments and hung them on the Christmas tree. They also danced with Rudolph and Frosty and shared their Christmas wishes with Santa Claus. Photo by Felix Perez.

River Road Flood421 viewsA rainstorm on March 29 and 30 wreaked havoc on Massachusetts, leaving the Commonwealth in a state of emergency. The real fall-out didn’t arrive until March 31, when water tables reached record heights and dams in the region were tested to their maximum capacity. The Hathaway Pond Dam in Rochester needed reinforcement with sandbags and the area of Plumb Corner and Dexter Lane became a makeshift pond.
