Library Social555 viewsParticipants in the Mattapoisett summer reading program, “Starship Adventure at Your Library,” enjoyed an ice cream social on August 12 at the Mattapoisett Free Public Library. Over 227 children and their families participated throughout the summer, and approximately 100 participants came to enjoy the ice cream at the social. Electronics Recycling555 viewsDespite the rain, Boy Scout Troop #31 in Rochester held an Electronics Recycling Day at Plumb Corner on October 24. Gifts to Give555 viewsOn January 16, local high school students collected donations for Gifts to Give, a student-powered community organization that services families in need. Gifts To Give encourages Southcoast students to volunteer for their community. Students help organize collection drives or can work a "shift" at the New Bedford processing warehouse. Hurricane Irene555 viewsAlthough wind gusts teetered on hurricane strength, Irene was a tropical storm as she made landfall in the Tri-Town on August 28, 2011. The storm knocked out electricity for over 200,000 NSTAR customers in Massachusetts. On Tuesday, as The Wanderer was being sent to the printer, many Mattapoisett residents were still without power. Plumb Knitters555 viewsThe Knitters at Plumb Library have done it again. Last year, they donated 185 scarves for soldiers. This year, the Rochester knitters made items for children, donating 46 caps for preemies at Charlton Hospital, and 19 pairs of mittens, 40 hats, 23 scarves, one sweater, and one pair of socks for "Gifts to Give" in New Bedford. New Year Plunge555 viewsOn January 1, 2013, Mattapoisett Town Beach played host to a New Year’s polar plunge fundraiser. The event, which attracted over 400 people, raised money to benefit BAM Foundation, Inc., a New Bedford non-profit which donates money to South Coast families dealing with members who have cancer.
