Whale Watch514 viewsOn December 2, a small, curious humpback whale surfaced in Marion between Nye’s Wharf and Ram Island. Long-time residents of the town couldn’t remember a prior whale sighting. The animal looked to be about 20 feet long. Marion resident Michael Moore guessed from its size that the whale was young -- and a sight that young humans would not want to miss. Marion Town Party514 viewsChalk up another successful Marion Town Party as several hundred party-goers found good food and fun on the grounds of the Town House on 8/25. Children of all ages enjoyed inflatable games, climbing the rock wall, or jumping around to music. The annual party has its roots deep in the community and may have started as early at 1900. This year’s event featured live entertainment, a scavenger hunt, and lots of good food.

Tour de Crème514 viewsThis year’s 4th annual Tour de Crème raised $12,000 for outdoor recreation in Mattapoisett! There were 350 riders consuming over 1,200 scoops of ice cream all for a good cause. Cardboard Boats514 viewsSCOPE Week meant big fun at the beach in Mattapoisett for ORR Junior High seventh-graders who built their own boats and then raced them on June 5 in Mattapoisett. While half the students head off for Survival, the others enjoy a week of equally challenging tasks of the 40-year tradition of SCOPE that gives students a chance to learn while learning about themselves and each other. Survival Week 514 viewsSurvival Week is as much a test of ORR seventh-grade students’ wilderness survival skills as it is a test of their parents’ ability to make the most of the week without their kids. On Sunday, June 9, parents, siblings, and family pets waited eagerly for their children’s arrival from Survival 2019. After a few big hugs, parents whisked their kids away to home and a hot shower. Marion Natural History Museum514 viewsOne hull or two? On March 11, the Marion Natural History Museum afterschool group explored the physics behind sailboat design. Mark Whalen, engineer with Massachusetts Maritime Academy, introduced several alternative design ideas for constructing our own sailboats. The students explored a variety of hull designs, mast locations and different sizes and shapes of sails. Then they raced the vessels in rain gutters to see which design moved fastest.

Attendees learned about which plants are native and which plants have been introduced to the state.
