Poker Run476 viewsMotorcyclists gathered Sunday morning, September 20, in the parking lot of ORR to ride in the third annual Poker Run for Alex Pateakos. Alex is a five-year-old Marion boy who suffers from Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Money raised by the poker run will benefit Alex, and Families of SMA, a group that helps families like the Pateakos’ live their lives as close to normal as possible. Christmas Swim476 viewsA 2009 Christmas morning swim benefitted Helping Hands and Hooves, a Mattapoisett non-profit organization dedicated to therapeutic horseback riding for adults with disabilities. 40 swimmers and at least 50 onlookers participated in the 2009 swim. Gold Medal476 viewsThe Old Hammondtown School orchestra pulled off its fifth straight gold medal at the Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductors Association competition. As a prize, the orchestra got to play at the Boston Symphony Hall on April 27. This was a bittersweet moment for the orchestra, as it will be the last year that they will enjoy the guidance of their music teachers, Stan Ellis and Jean West, who are both retiring this year. The ceremony began with a service at the Veteran’s monument in front of the library, and then a parade assembled and marched to the town wharf and to Cushing Cemetery.
