Marion Natural History Museum667 viewsOver the past two Wednesdays, the MNHM afterschool group visited Bird Island courtesy of Isaac and Peter of the Marion Harbormaster's office. We observed many terns arriving to this crucial nesting spot, as well as oystercatchers, gulls, and a pair of Canadian geese. We inspected nesting boxes prepared by the state Fish & Wildlife department and the habitat restoration improvements to the island. We also toured the 200-year-old lighthouse.

Old Rochester Little League666 viewsThe Old Rochester Little League celebrated its Opening Day of the 2016 season on Saturday, April 30 at Gifford Park off Dexter Road in Rochester. The young athletes took part in the traditional Opening Day parade, which began at Dexter Park and concluded at Dexter Field. Triathlon666 viewsThe Triathlon kicked off the first of the many Harbor Days events scheduled over the week and into the weekend. Hosted by the Mattapoisett Lions Club every year, the triathlon takes racers .25 miles from the shore of Town Beach and back, 10 miles bicycling through Mattapoisett, and 5K through the village around Ned’s Point Lighthouse. Marion Natural History Museum666 viewsDuring our after-school netting program at the Harbormaster's beach, the students had a chance to study a variety of our seashore animals. The totals were: 278 silversides, 14 mummichogs, 1 pipefish, 15 glass shrimp, 10 moon jellies, 1 sea nettle and 3 sea robins. There were many other larger fish but we couldn't get close enough to identify them. We were lucky enough to have a warm sunny day to enjoy the activity, and the museum would like to thank the student helpers from both Tabor Academy and ORRHS.
