Marion Natural History Museum574 viewsDespite the impending Polar Vortex, a small hardy group learned to identify some our local trees and shrubs in winter. Have you ever smelled a black cherry? (Yuck!) Or a yellow birch? (Yum!) We learned about opposite and alternate leaf arrangement on a branch, what lenticels look like on a birch and a hickory, and that you can make tea out of sassafras. Thank you to Sarah Porter for the great program. Photos courtesy Elizabeth Leidhold

Boston Post Cane574 viewsSelectman Brad Morse presented the Boston Post cane to Rochester’s oldest living resident, Edna Chadwick, 101, at her home on June 11. The Boston Post cane tradition was started in 1909 when the now defunct newspaper presented 700 New England towns with ebony canes imported from Africa and crowned in 14-karat gold to be passed down to the oldest resident living in the town. The last cane holder, Marion Thomas, passed away on April 19, 2019, at the age of 102. Photo courtesy Amanda Baptiste

Marion Natural History Museum574 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum had a great time learning how to identify some of our rare turtles and what to do if we find one. We found out which is our smelliest turtle and which can close up into a "box" so tight you can't even slip a piece of paper between its shell. The students had a chance to get up close with a diamondback terrapin, an Eastern box turtle, and an enormous Plymouth red-bellied cooter. Many thanks to Brian Bastarach of Bristol County Agricultural High School’s Natural Resources Dep
