Marion Natural History Museum516 viewsOne hull or two? On March 11, the Marion Natural History Museum afterschool group explored the physics behind sailboat design. Mark Whalen, engineer with Massachusetts Maritime Academy, introduced several alternative design ideas for constructing our own sailboats. The students explored a variety of hull designs, mast locations and different sizes and shapes of sails. Then they raced the vessels in rain gutters to see which design moved fastest.

Rochester Woman Turns 100515 viewsLongtime Rochester resident Kathryn Elizabeth Phillips is celebrating her 100th birthday this week. Two family gatherings are planned in her honor on Saturday, April 12. Ms. Phillips, who first moved to Rochester in 1949 from a similar farming town in Ohio, described herself as a woodchuck farmer and said shes always kept active and ate a well-balanced diet of fresh produce cultivated on her own farms. Among her many local relatives, she is the grandmother of Rochester Selectman Brad Morse.

Brownie Points515 viewsMembers of Mattapoisett Brownie Troop 82 recently paid a visit to the residents of Village Court in Mattapoisett. The troop had a May Day Celebration on May 8 for Mattapoisett seniors at the facility. Brownie Troop 82 served guests refreshments, chatted with the ladies, sang a few songs and danced around a May pole.
