Old Colony Regional Vocational-Technical High School Boys’ Basketball Team102 viewsThe Old Colony Regional Vocational-Technical High School boys basketball team developed a starting five that made the most of their senior year, going 18-2 through the regular-season schedule, capturing the State Small School Vocational title and advancing in the MIAA Division 5 state tournament before bowing to top-seeded, undefeated and eventual state champion Pioneer Valley. Rochester Rodeo102 viewsThe second of the bi-weekly rodeo was held at the Rochester Fair Grounds this past Saturday by New England Rodeo. Present were over 20 professional bull riders from New England, Latin America, and Brazil. There were also professional barrel riders and mounted shooters. There were some young cowboys and cowgirls who also gave it their best to stay on a bucking pony. Marion Natural History Museum102 viewsOn July 16, the Marion Natural History Museum's community group had a chance to explore some of our local butterfly species. We found a Clouded Sulphur, Eastern tailed blue, Monarchs, Little Wood Satyrs, Common Wood Nymphs, and two Pearl Crescents. We also learned to identify some of their host plants including Butterfly Weed, Milkweed, Sweet Pepperbush and Mountain Mint. Mattapoisett Triathlon102 viewsThe Mattapoisett Triathlon took place on Sunday, July 27. The event, hosted by the Mattapoisett Lions Club, saw over 100 competitors begin from Town Beach, swim 0.25 miles, bike 10 miles north of town and back, and finally run a 5K past Ned’s Point and back around to the beach. Old Rochester Youth Baseball League101 viewsThe first Opening Day since 2019 brought out Old Rochester Youth Baseball League players and their families on Saturday morning in Rochester. A parade began at the Dexter Lane baseball complex and made its way to Gifford Park, where ORYB’s David Arancio recognized the many years of service from Derek Mello, Peter Vieira and David Nelson, who all threw ceremonial first pitches. Tri-Town firefighters101 viewsThe holidays were challenging for Tri-Town firefighters. Marion and Rochester fire departments were among towns assisting Wareham after a mulch pile in a remote location off County Road caught fire on Christmas Eve. Firefighters worked in cold temperatures for eight hours, dispensing approximately 200,000 gallons of water to extinguish the fire. Marion Natural History Museum101 viewsLast Wednesday, the museum's adult community program braved the cold to learn a little about how to identify trees in winter with DCR Forester James Rassman. From Birches to Poplars to Oaks we learned about branching patterns, bark design, and other techniques to identify our local trees without their leaves. Jim then stuck around to talk our afterschool group about the importance of trees and what they do for us and the earth. Many thanks to Jim for sharing his expertise with us.
