Crocodile River Music204 viewsOn Saturday, May 17, as part of Art Week, the Marion Arts Center presented Crocodile River Music performing West African music and dance in Marion's Music Hall to an audience of about 70 people. A few children danced happily along with members of Crocodile River Music during several pieces. For the final piece of the event, almost everyone was up and dancing. The energy was terrific. The event, sponsored by the Rochester Fire Department, saw contestants build boats and race south along the Mattapoisett River. MBTA Commuter Rail203 viewsThe initial group of brand-new MBTA Commuter Rail cars destined for Rochester were in West Wareham on June 16, nearing the end of a long journey that took the cars from South Korea where they were constructed to Baltimore, Maryland, where they were put on rails and eventually brought to Massachusetts and welcomed by a crew of MBTA personnel. Rochester Grange Fair 203 viewsThe Annual Rochester Grange Fair was held on August 20 for the 111th time! Grange members displayed their talents in a variety of categories ranging from vegetable growing, photography, baking, crocheting and floral arrangements. Awards were given to first, second and third-place winners as well as the Judges Awards. Boy Scout Troop 31 assisted Grange members, headed by Chairman Herbert LaFleur and Secretary Susan LaFleur. Recycled Art203 viewsOn August 27, an exhibit of art crafted by an intergenerational group was opened to the public. On display was a jellyfish from gift ribbons, spice and herb shaker tops organized like a universe of the imagination, a bust of a female figure with braids created from plastic bags and tie-wraps, a deconstructed cookbook cut in strips and woven together in new text layouts and fabric swatches reorganized and reimagined as unintentional visual glories.
