Old Rochester Youth Baseball League211 viewsThe first Opening Day since 2019 brought out Old Rochester Youth Baseball League players and their families on Saturday morning in Rochester. A parade began at the Dexter Lane baseball complex and made its way to Gifford Park, where ORYB’s David Arancio recognized the many years of service from Derek Mello, Peter Vieira and David Nelson, who all threw ceremonial first pitches. Kylie Faison is the youngest of the quartet of artists and artisans whose works are now on display at the Mattapoisett Library through June 14. Kayak Clinic211 viewsAugust 9 and 10, the Mattapoisett Land Trust in partnership with the Mattapoisett Recreation Department held two kayak clinics for children ages 8 to 12. MLT volunteers provided safety instructions, a major focus of the program. Kayak introductory instruction has been provided by the two organizations for six years. Marion Natural History Museum211 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's Coastal Exploration group had a wonderful time last week exploring Marion's shoreline, inland wetlands and woodland areas. We collected examples of plankton, caught fish and frogs in our nets, investigated tide pools and took trips to Bird and Ram Island. Oil Spill Drill211 viewsOn Tuesday, the Town of Mattapoisett hosted a MassDEP-sponsored training course in cooperation with the Town of Fairhaven, representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard, Nuka Research and Planning Group and Moran Environmental Recovery. Working the Mattapoisett Harbormaster boat piloted by P.J. ORR Spirit Week211 viewsThe culmination of Old Rochester Regional High School’s Spirit Week was a pep rally held after October 7 classes in the gymnasium. ORR sophomores performed a Wizard of Oz skit, and the ORR Bulldog joined Dorothy and company. The seniors displayed a "Back in Time/Back to the Future" theme, featuring a cleverly constructed “Delorean,” a colorful aerobics class, lots of action and energetic music with Marty McFly and Doc Brown characters joined by the heroic Bulldog.

Wareham Area Committee for the Homeless211 viewsAnticipating an especially difficult winter for meeting heating and housing needs, the Wareham-New Bedford Elks recently awarded the Wareham Area Committee for the Homeless (WACH), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization doing business as Turning Point, a $5,000 check for rental assistance and home fuel assistance for neighbors in need. Turning Point serves homeless and near homeless people in the communities of Wareham, Carver, Marion, Mattapoisett, Rochester, Middleboro and Buzzards Bay.
