Tornado in Mattapoisett235 viewsAn EF-1 tornado touched down late Tuesday morning in Mattapoisett. The unusual weather event downed power lines and hundreds of trees, knocking out power to many homes north of Route 195. Television news crews descended from Boston, as the Mattapoisett Fire and Police departments worked with utility companies and many power lines to clean up roads and assist area residents coming home to frightening scenes. Marion Natural History Museum235 viewsDespite having to reschedule the trip due to poor weather, October 3 was a perfect day to explore. We learned a little about the history of the structures that were built and destroyed during different winter storms and the Hurricane of 1938 which wiped out everything but the lighthouse. We heard that the lighthouse was built in 1819, and the original lighthouse keeper was William S. Moore.

Mattapoisett’s Fire Department235 viewsMattapoisett’s Fire Department opened its doors to the community on October 12 with a grand party filled with family, friends and pizza. The event was an opportunity for the department to highlight fire prevention while tiny tots donned helmets and rang the bell on an antique fire engine. “It’s a great success,” said Chief Andrew Murray of the event that hosted several hundred people of all ages. New Fire Engine Number 3 was on display having just a day before been added to the fleet.

Marion Natural History Museum235 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum’s Community group had a terrific morning doing some bird watching with Justin Barrett last week. Justin is the president of the Nasketucket Bird Club and longtime member of the museum’s Board of Directors. We saw 28 different species including a yellow rumpled warbler, a pine warbler, an eastern towhee, Downey woodpeckers, northern flickers and many chipping sparrows.
