Marion Natural History Museum375 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's afterschool group had fun last week learning why deer and moose grow antlers, when and why they lose them, and where to look for the shed antlers. We talked about horns versus antlers and inspected some of the museum specimens of each. We then split into groups and hid pretend "antlers" outside and had a blast hiding them on each other and trying to locate them in the fallen leaves. Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus375 viewsMr. and Mrs. Santa Claus make their turn through Rochester Village onto New Bedford Road on December 5. Transported by the Rochester Fire Department on a journey that began at Fire Station No. 3 at 200 Ryder Road and accompanied by Santa’s helpers riding along in trucks, Mr. and Mrs. Claus made their way down many Rochester roads, spending hours to visit hundreds of children waiting at the end of their driveways and on street corners. Marion Natural History Museum375 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum wishes to thank Justin Barrett for the fun time we had last week learning about the importance of the Great Backyard Bird Count. The students were able to identify the many species including Starling (small flock), Mourning Dove, Juncos (good views), Cardinal, House Finch, House Sparrow, and American Crow. Grade 2 Basketball Playoffs375 viewsThe Grade 2 basketball playoffs brought out the best in March 10 action at Center School in Mattapoisett. The Warriors earned their spot in the championship game with a big, 10-2 victory over the Heat, while the Knicks advanced to the title game, narrowly edging the Celtics, 10-8. Volunteers at Sippican Elementary375 viewsVolunteers at Sippican Elementary (VASE) hosted their fourth Boosterthon Fun Run fundraiser last week. VASE works with Booster, a company that helps raise funds for enrichment activities such as in-school performances, field trips and afterschool programs. Students reached out to friends, family and businesses across 30 states and 7 countries; 87 percent of the student body registered with 79 percent earning donations for Sippican.

Charles Stockbridge375 viewsOn March 27, local artist Charles Stockbridge gave a painting demonstration in the style of impressionist works at the Mattapoisett Public Library. Stockbridge is a classically-trained historian and painter whose works have hung in galleries and homes both near and far. While he is best known for landscapes and marine themes, Stockbridge has recently been exploring paintings that are more in the genre of a Claude Monet.

Marion Department of Public Works375 viewsMarion Department of Public Works Director Nathaniel Munafo manages a site at the end of Benson Brook Road that will see changes should voters support funding for a new DPW operations center at the May 9 Annual Town Meeting.
