Mattapoisett Boatyard Fire253 viewsSmoke rose over Mattapoisett Harbor on August 19 after a boat caught fire during the replacement of a gasoline tank. An explosion followed by a raging fire leveled Mattapoisett Boatyard and destroyed the 14 boats and 47 vehicles on site. Members of the Kaiser family who own the business and members of the McLean family who founded the business surveyed the ruins on the weekend and vow to rebuild. Rockets253 viewsMattapoisett Library hosted Dr. Sandra Pearl of SEED Education on September 21. SEED is a regional, nonprofit organization run by Ph.D. scientists with a passion for empowering teachers with the confidence to instill a love of science in their students. Pearl led a group of eager students through science experiments geared to launching things into the air. There was age-appropriate physics, chemistry and just plain fun. The activity was made possible through a grant from the Mattapoisett Cultural Council.

Pumpkin Palooza253 viewsSaturday’s Pumpkin Palooza hosted by the Marion Council of Aging and the Recreation Department at the Cushing Community Center. Families decorated pumpkins, and children enjoyed face painting, a hula-hoop contest, dancing, a visit from Pine Meadow Farm animals and refreshments supported by Tabor Academy volunteers. Pumpkins were later illuminated, giving the pavilion an eerie weekend presence. Sixty-five families preregistered to participate in the event inspired by Marion citizen Dianne Cosman

Marion Natural History Museum253 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum braved the snowy weather Wednesday and attending members were rewarded with 18 different shoreline bird sightings. The sightings included a large “raft” of sleepy Greater Scaup, Canada Geese, American Black Duck, Surf Scoter, Long-tailed Duck, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, Hooded Merganser, Red-breasted Merganser, Horned Grebe, Ring-billed Gull, Herring Gull, Common Loon, American Crow, American Robin, House Finch, Song Sparrow and Northern Cardinal. St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church253 viewsOn February 21, St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church in Marion celebrated Fat Tuesday with a Mardi Gras party. We ate delicious food and played lots of great games. Many thanks to the Youth Group for all their hard work preparing the evening’s Louisiana-style foods and for leading the games. Marion Museum of Natural History253 viewsThe Marion Museum of Natural History would like to thank Karen Alves Cronin and our volunteer parents for the wonderful program March 15. First, Karen showed us how gravity and a simple bucket suspended on a line and filled with paint can produce beautiful paintings. The students painted their canvases with a colorful background and then placed them under the suspended bucket pendulum. When filled with paint and rotated over the canvases.

Marion Natural History Museum253 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum would like to thank David Orwig, forest ecologist with the Harvard Forest, for his wonderful presentation about Old Growth Forests on April 7. Orwig discussed some the tree species to look for and explained that the size of the tree does not matter when looking for truly old trees. He showed us how to determine the age of a tree, why the same species of tree might have different bark depending on age and why some of the oldest trees can be relatively small in size. A Vimeo
