Marion Art Center259 viewsLaser wood-cutting techniques used by artist Makerjake, aka Jacob Ginga, combine contemporary themes with those of his native heritage. Together with Narragansett tribal member Max Brown-Garcia, who has supplied Native American regalia pieces, and Vincent Mancini's creations from cut feathers, these sacred works are part of the Marion Art Center’s indigenous art exhibit, “Exploring Native American Culture: Art, Craft and Inspiration,” through March 25. Charles W. Stockbridge's Paintings259 viewsMattapoisett artist Charles W. Stockbridge's paintings are on display at the Mattapoisett Public Library now through April 15. Stockbridge is also scheduled to conduct two, one-hour painting demonstrations at the library on March 27 at 2:00 pm and again on April 20 at 6:30 pm.

Marion Natural History Museum259 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum after-school group had a chance to take a closeup look at some of the amphibians and invertebrates that require these special habitats to survive. We found a leaf-rolling caddisfly larvae, several colorful chronomidge larvae, salamander and wood-frog eggs. All specimens made their way safely back to their specific pool, and the kids have learned to have a new respect for these “nurseries” of the forest. Cooper Newton 259 viewsCooper Newton received an emotional welcome home from his parents Peter and Marley Newton, his girlfriend Autumn Horsey and a host of extended family and friends. The Mattapoisett native sailed his 27-foot boat Why Worry on a solo journey that took him as far as Turks and Caicos south of the Bahamas. Massachusetts Fire Academy 259 viewsThe Massachusetts Fire Academy conducted a 48-hour class on Saturday involving Fire personnel from the region at Magnolia Cranberry located on Sherman Briggs’ bog accessible off Front Street. The class focused on operating the engine (pumper) in both rural areas and areas with fire hydrants. Seven students enrolled from Marion Fire Department were enrolled. According to Marion Fire Chief Brian Jackvony, the class was originally scheduled for completion in 2020 but was postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Marion Museum of Natural History259 viewsThe Marion Museum of Natural History celebrated its 150th anniversary with a Friday night discussion on the 700-pound meteorite Coahuila, led by Mark Munkacsy. Later in the evening, Ted and Elizabeth Brainard visited Coahuila with Executive Director Liz Leidhold, while Treasurer Mike Cronin set up a telescope on the sidewalk out front of the Elizabeth Taber Library where attendees took turns viewing Jupiter and its moons. Pumpkin Palooza259 viewsSaturday’s Pumpkin Palooza hosted by the Marion Council of Aging and the Recreation Department at the Cushing Community Center. Families decorated pumpkins, and children enjoyed face painting, a hula-hoop contest, dancing, a visit from Pine Meadow Farm animals and refreshments supported by Tabor Academy volunteers. Pumpkins were later illuminated, giving the pavilion an eerie weekend presence. Sixty-five families preregistered to participate in the event inspired by Marion citizen Dianne Cosman
