Ned’s Point Lighthouse175 viewsTuesday afternoon offered a sneak preview of the reopening of Ned’s Point Lighthouse scheduled for Saturday, October 9, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Cathy Hardy and Mike Lally, a Texas couple, happened to be in the right place at the right time to become the first visitors to the 183-year-old lighthouse that had been closed for the past two years and three months. Soapbox Derby175 viewsMarion and Rochester Cub Scouts came together on November 6 for a soapbox derby on Holmes Street in Marion. The longtime fundraising event was not held in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic but made a roaring return on Saturday, as children raced their homemade go-carts and collected donations for the Murphy and Others, Living Interdependently for Future Endeavors, Inc. Marion Natural History Museum175 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum wishes to thank Justin Barrett for the fun time we had last week learning about the importance of the Great Backyard Bird Count. The students were able to identify the many species including Starling (small flock), Mourning Dove, Juncos (good views), Cardinal, House Finch, House Sparrow, and American Crow. Marion Natural History Museum175 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum after-school group had a chance to take a closeup look at some of the amphibians and invertebrates that require these special habitats to survive. We found a leaf-rolling caddisfly larvae, several colorful chronomidge larvae, salamander and wood-frog eggs. All specimens made their way safely back to their specific pool, and the kids have learned to have a new respect for these “nurseries” of the forest. The Mattapoisett native sailed his 27-foot boat Why Worry on a solo journey that took him as far as Turks and Caicos south of the Bahamas.
