Marion Art Center193 viewsLaser wood-cutting techniques used by artist Makerjake, aka Jacob Ginga, combine contemporary themes with those of his native heritage. Together with Narragansett tribal member Max Brown-Garcia, who has supplied Native American regalia pieces, and Vincent Mancini's creations from cut feathers, these sacred works are part of the Marion Art Center’s indigenous art exhibit, “Exploring Native American Culture: Art, Craft and Inspiration,” through March 25. Volunteers at Sippican Elementary193 viewsVolunteers at Sippican Elementary (VASE) hosted their fourth Boosterthon Fun Run fundraiser last week. VASE works with Booster, a company that helps raise funds for enrichment activities such as in-school performances, field trips and afterschool programs. Students reached out to friends, family and businesses across 30 states and 7 countries; 87 percent of the student body registered with 79 percent earning donations for Sippican.

Tri-Town recreation basketball League193 viewsWednesday, March 23 was finals night for the Tri-Town recreation basketball League. The league has players from all three towns and is run by Mattapoisett and Marion Recreation. Over 200 players registered this year for the three leagues.

Cooper Newton 193 viewsCooper Newton received an emotional welcome home from his parents Peter and Marley Newton, his girlfriend Autumn Horsey and a host of extended family and friends. The Mattapoisett native sailed his 27-foot boat Why Worry on a solo journey that took him as far as Turks and Caicos south of the Bahamas. Salty Soiree193 viewsThe annual Mattapoisett Land Trust Salty Soiree held on October 22 at Dunseith Park was a huge success, as young and old enjoyed a fire pit, 200 luminaries and s'mores. Adding to the festive event was music provided by Jeff Dunn and unique, fantasy-filled puppet stories and songs by Jackson Gillman. Food and music added to the festive atmosphere, and the presence of Mr. and Mrs. Claus (Mr. and Mrs. Milton Heuberger), Frosty the Snowman (Brian Hiller), one of Santa's reindeer (Ashling McLoughlin) and one of the big guy's most trusted Elves (Jen Scott) brought smiles and picture opportunities.
