Marion Natural History Museum195 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum after-school group had a wonderful time learning about the Eastern Box Turtle with Brian Butler of Oxbow Associates, Inc. Brian explained why land turtles are rounder than turtles that live in water, and that turtles have been on earth for 200 million years. Box turtles protect themselves by pulling their heads and legs into their shell and closing up, however they don't move very fast.

Marion Natural History Museum195 viewsThe Marion Natural History Museum's afterschool group had a wonderful time setting off their rockets on June 9. Despite the blistering hot weather, the rockets were all successfully launched, and the parachutes deployed (most of the time). The students had built their rockets at home before the program with a YouTube video created by the program's presenter, Mike Cronin.

Acceleration Academy195 viewsThanks to a state grant, the Old Rochester Regional School District held an Acceleration Academy last week for over 150 students. Representing Grades K-2, 3-4, 8 and 10, the students participated in five days of concentrated study in early literacy and math. The week’s effort added up to a month’s worth of classwork. Salty's Silvery Moon Soiree195 viewsOn the evening of October 23, the Mattapoisett Land Trust hosted its annual Salty’s Silvery Moon Soiree at Dunseith Gardens. The yearly autumn event finds families gathering around a roaring fire pit and toasting marshmallows or creating delicious desserts while listening to live music. Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus195 viewsMr. and Mrs. Santa Claus make their turn through Rochester Village onto New Bedford Road on December 5. Transported by the Rochester Fire Department on a journey that began at Fire Station No. 3 at 200 Ryder Road and accompanied by Santa’s helpers riding along in trucks, Mr. and Mrs. Claus made their way down many Rochester roads, spending hours to visit hundreds of children waiting at the end of their driveways and on street corners. The event was held for the benefit of Helping Hands and Hooves, a program run by Julie Craig and Debbie Dyson that offers experiences, especially horseback riding, to people with cognitive challenges who have aged out of the many children's programs. Together with Narragansett tribal member Max Brown-Garcia, who has supplied Native American regalia pieces, and Vincent Mancini's creations from cut feathers, these sacred works are part of the Marion Art Center’s indigenous art exhibit, “Exploring Native American Culture: Art, Craft and Inspiration,” through March 25.
