Marion Natural History Museum428 viewsFriday night the Marion Natural History Museum hosted a standing-room-only presentation about the Black Bear population in Massachusetts. According to state fish and wildlife biologists Jason Zimmer and Steven Wright, the population is rapidly expanding into the eastern part of our state. Jason gave us some good tips to keep black bears out of our property, including removing bird feeders, covering and keeping our garbage contained, and how to keep bears out of our livestock. Annawon Weeden428 viewsActor and activist Annawon Weeden spoke to a full house at the Marion Congregational Church on May 11. Sponsored by the Marion Art Center, Weeden spoke on all matters indigenous from languages to the creation story shared by many nations. Weeden also noted the use of wampum (created from quahog shells) to make jewelry and as a form of monetary exchange. Marion Natural History Museum428 viewsOn May 24, the Marion Natural History Museum and Sippican Lands Trust teamed up to learn about the latest developments in the protection of Right Whales. Dr. Michael Moore, Right Whale biologist with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, gave us the most recent data collected about this species. Children learned how to load a musket, Boy Scouts Troop 31 demonstrated archery skills, visitors enjoyed live music and baked goods and those who ducked inside the 1857 East Rochester Church were treated to an amazing display of artifacts.
